A few days ago I helped a friend load and unload 3 cords of wood (by myself) later that evening I was playing poker. While playing I have a tendency to keep my arm in one position. It was because of that position that I got a back spasm located under or near the right shoulder blade and around the nape of the neck. Tried hot shower, no luck. I tried 3 different over the counter pain meds. They didnt help. I tried a heat cream it didnt help. I also tried a prescribed muscle relaxant, it didnt work. This now the 3rd day of stiffness. The first 2 days were very painful, however today it seem to have reduced somewhat. Do you have any suggestion for future episodes. A home remedy perhaps. What do you do for a back spasm? I REALLY want to know!

Don't underestimate the relief you might get from massage and guided stretching. Several people I know who suffer from chronic back pain do yoga and other guided stretching classes. If the pain is really bad like you describe, it might be worth the money for a professional massage. It would not need to be that long if the therapist just focused on your back. He/She might also have other ideas to help you.
Hope this is useful!

I am sorry to hear that, ben! You said the medicines didn't work, did you use topical medicine?or just oral medicines?
Do not take hot shower,it's not saft when you are not comfortable. You could buy a new towel, wring out the towel after washing it in hot water.(130°F),then cover the towel to the affected part for 1-3 minutes.Try this several times.Sometimes when my leg spasms,I do so.I think it may be a bit useful.
Acupuncture can reduce your pain markedly, you have to call the doctors first.I never tried acupuncture,so I am not sure weather it is useful.
Wish you get rid of the pain as fast as possible.

I have a bad back and constant spasms. I take Tylenol PM for my back, and it usually works. I'm surprised that the muscle relaxer didn't work. I used to take those when I had insurance. Now I just take the PM
I hope the spasms go away, they really are hard to deal with.
