My boyfriend cannot get rid of the smoking habit,how to help him? email this discussion to a friend?

My boyfriend has been smoking for almost 10 years plus,I always ask him to quit this habit but never successful. I don't know what should I do anymore.He is trying to lessen the number of cigarettes in a day but still he smokes.I am worrying about his health.Every time he just ignores my advice,please help me to sort out this problem.

Get two very small magnets..like the kind found in old, non working headphones? Put on magnet on one side of his ear toward teh top and then kep it in place there by putting the second one on the opposite side, so they pull toward each other and stay put!
I don't know why, but it seems to work. he'll pay atention ot them and his attention will be off the cigarettes!
It's like chinese acupressure.They have used it a long time and it seems ot help poeple kick the habit!

He's got to want to quit for himself. It does not help if you worry and talk about it. At least that's ow it was for me. You have to be ready and you have to really want to. Otherwise you'll fail. I quit after reding Allen carrs book the easy way to quit smoking. It was really good - at least it made me stop smoking just like that. Bought the book friday, saturday evening I was a non smoker. have not had one cigarette since. i smoked for 17.18 years. More than a pack a day. Cutting down did not work at all. That just made me focus on smoking all the time. I'd try the book. Google Carr and read about it online.

There are lots of things he can try. He needs to realize that not only does he need to make it through his physical addiction, he also needs to make behavioral changes as well. He can wear the patch - be sure to take it off before going to bed - to avoid crazy dreams. Gum and lozenges also are very helpful. It's also possible that his doctor can prescribed him bupropion or chantix. He should learn what triggers him to smoke and modify those behaviors - go for a walk, play a video game, whatever it takes to get his mind off of the craving because it only lasts as long as it takes to smoke a cigarette.

Quitting smoking is hard because people smoke for different reasons and require different ways of quitting.

For instance... if you smoke out of anxiety, usually you need a strong medication from your doctor.

The patch works for some people who smoke because they need the buz from the nicotine

And some people smoke because they have an oral fixation, which I hear gum helps.

He smokes a lot when he is stressed up on his work.I think he should find another way to cope with the stress instead of smoking,but he is so stubborn...

first of all, you have to convince him to accept that he is a chain smoker. once he already accepted that fact, you ask him if he is willing to stop that habit of smoking. if he say yes, you can introduce him some ways to help eradicate his addiction to cigarettes. make unique and interesting ways to encourage him. you might as well have a little bet. if he can decrease his habit of smoking, you give him rewards of any gift. that way, he'll be inspired to get the goal you both want to achieve.

I have tried the similar ways as what you said,but it was not workable.Maybe at first it showed some differences but after some time,he smokes again....

I am sorry but I think maybe you should leave your boyfriend alone. He has to quit for himself. By the sounds of it, I think you want him to quit smoking more so then he does. I stopped for 3 months now and thats because it bothers my wife and her asthma. But I made her believe I quit smoking and I smoked around her back. It was awful sneaking and everything. I smoked for 27 years. My lungs are great. I think you should not get on him about his smoking IF YOU ARE> he may recent you later. He does not want to quit possibly. I cannot quit for my wife. I did it o my own witout resentment. I told her honestly about 6 months ago that I quit for her and I only made it a few days and I sneaked around smoking. I come home clean my hands, shower, brush my teeth and put my smelly shirt in the laundry. I did this often. So, I finally quit on my own. Dont get mad at me or resent me for this please.

There is a saying that you cannot help people who don't want to be helped. There seems to be a little bit of that going on since you say your boyfriend ignores your advice. Was he smoking when you met him? That's a big give-away that you aren't going to be able to change his habits for him. He has to want to change. I guess telling him it isn't good for him isn't enough. Maybe try showing him what it does to your body. Explain how worried you are. He will hopefully realize how much quitting will mean to you, and if he cares about you he will consider it.

Yes,when I met him,he already smoked for almost 10 years. Now he is showing improvement on cutting down the number of ciggys.But when he is stressed up,he will start to increase the number again. I have told him all the bad effects of smoking but it seemed not work for him. I think I gonna let him be and let him figure out himself.
