LOL--My Great-Grandmother Was Right!  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life 4 years ago

While I was looking up and doing research for a discussion I just started about medications and children, I happen to see another glaring article that "spoke" to me....LOL.
My great-grandmother was a nurse but thought all doctors to be..uh, well A-holes...she didn't believe in medications and preferred natural and herbal remedies. She never took anything stronger than aspirin and lived to be 98. Well one of her "recommendations" was to drink what she called a "pony" of port wine, or red wine in general...(Could someone Palease tell me what a pony means...is it a shot glassful??)--heck she even like her glass a day of good ole whiskey...LOL-- I remember my mother telling me that having that "pony" of red wine was good for the blood.

Now I've never been a big drinker, but have to admit..a little while before I stretch out in bed and read before going to sleep, I like sitting and watching some TV while indulging in a glass of red wine (always preferred red). And goodness, now a new article has come out about the benefits of red wine. This is all due to the chemical resveratrol that is in red wine and has anti-aging properties...other studies in the past even have suggested that red wine is good for cholesterol levels. This chemical resveratrol is only found in the skin of grapes which is what makes red wine red...the skin is removed when white wine is fermented.

Tests have only been done on mice so far --gee, they must be happy mice..LOL..and they do get very high doses of the resveratrol chemical (very happy mice indeed)...but so far it looks like the benefits of resveratrol could have a great impact on the health of us humans.

The article is here and again..there's a video one can watch

So do you partake of red wine??? Did you realize the health benefits of wine. I have a nice bottle of Gato Negro Merlot in my fridge...lol

I do not care for red wine, but I love white. If it is in grape skin though whey cant we just eat grapes?

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Would probably have to eat a lot of grapes..LOL...no I think its the fermentation process that concentrates and releases that chemical

Actually I heard that red grapes are still very good for you for some of the same health benefits. It's funny how smart our granny's were!

Hi pye,

That was fantastic about great gran who use herbal remedies and being a nurse. I usually have a glass of red wine with my Sunday dinner, but sometime when my husband is not working in the morning, we have a glass or two. Cheers!

Bless

Tamara

Still would love to find out what my great grandmother meant by a "pony" that's driving me nuts not knowing..LOL

myLot reputation of 92/100. overwings (3631)  4 years ago

I heard the word with that meaning only a couple of times may be, and always from old people. Seems to be a quick shot in a small glass of any liquour.

I don't drink any alcohol. Sometimes for special occasions I might have something, but that is very seldom. I lead an extremely dull life, I don't drink or smoke or anything else either...lol.

You know, I've been thinking about starting to have a glass of red wine each night, but haven't started yet. It seems that the only times I really have had wine recently have been at events where it is provided for free (yep, I am that classy).

When I do drink, I'm more of a beer or vodka drinker--I'm not so sure how good those are for me, though!

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

LOL...one of the reasons I have that glass of wine before I go to bed is to be honest to help me sleep...rather have that then a sleeping pill. I don't drink at any other time not even at get togethers or parties otherwise I'd be falling asleeplol

What great news! Unfortunately, I cannot drink red wine at all! I just can't stand the way it tastes! I do love white wine though. But it's great news for all the red wine drinkers out there!

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Aww--shame you can't drink red wine. I never used to care for dry wines in particular but the sicky sweet kind but would use the dry wines to cook with. Then one time for my birthday I wanted to buy myself a special wine. At the time I was a die hard fan of the movie The Man With The Iron Mask with Gabriel Byrne, John Malkovich, etc...well I got a kick of the brand of French wine as it was named D'Artagnon...but it was a red dry wine...but figured..what the heck why not try it? I loved it...so no more sweet wines thank you..love the dry wines now.lol

I have been a red wine drinker since I was 15. Of course then it was cheapo Red Mountain Hearty Burgundy, which we drank constantly with our LSD.

My tastes have gotten a little more sophisticated these days, and of course I no longer take drugs with my wine, hehehe. I used to drink Merlot, but I have switched to Cabernet, which is not so heavy. I just finished off the last of my bottle the other night, now I have to wait for my sister to come up this weekend and bring me another bottle! Hehehe.

Here is some info on pony glasses:

And here is this, which talks about how it came to be known as a 'pony glass':

Actually forget how young I was when I started to regularly drink wine but used to like the sweet wines...couldn't drink them now if you gave me a million dollars. Thought technically speaking my drinking days in a sense started much younger. This was years ago when I was a mere "babe"--LOL..That was when my great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and I all lived together (wonder there wasn't a war)...anyway "Grandma" my great-grandmother was my babysitter while the other two went to work. The "joke" was that when my grandmother and mother would come home there "Grandma" be sitting in front of the TV with her shots of Whiskey and I'd be sitting next to her with a big tumbler glass of....beer (maybe some whiskey in it too)--to this day can't STAND the taste of either
and yikes..thank you, thank you, thank you for that info on what a pony is...you've solved the mystery!!thumbup

myLot reputation of 87/100. zigzagbuddha (1845)  4 years ago

Hahaha, I just read in some other post that 'Gato Negro' Merlot is Black Cat Merlot! Very funny... and appropriate! My sister once brought up a bottle of Merlot called 'Running With Scissors', hehehe! What kind of name is that for wine??

I still do like some sweet wines, like Elderberry, and also if I'm drinking a white wine I prefer it to be sweet, like a Liebfraumilch.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

I've never tried Elderberry wine..my great-grandmother always mentioned that too, and she used to make her own dandelion wine...and yes, I though Gato Negro label is very appropriate...LOL

myLot reputation of 87/100. zigzagbuddha (1845)  4 years ago

I made some dandelion wine one year. It was really quite fun gathering all the dandelions, it felt like a magic ritual, hehehe. The recipe called for a whole lot of sugar though. Anyway, I made the wine and bottled it up and put the bottles on my cool porch and waited for them to 'finish working'... except I didn't wait long enough before I corked them and the next thing I knew the corks had popped off like champagne corks do, and dandelion wine was all over my porch! What was left in the bottles I consolidated into 2 or 3 bottles and when we drank it a couple of years later it was really quite good!

One of my neighbors makes her own wine and she said she puts a balloon over the lip of the bottle and the balloon will expand as the fermentation process is at work, then when the balloon deflates it is safe to cork it up. I'll definitely do it that way next time!

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Wow thanks for that balloon tip...should I ever make my own wine I'll have to remember that

myLot reputation of 87/100. zigzagbuddha (1845)  4 years ago

Hehehe, yeah, that tip comes from an 80+ year old mountain woman who runs around with a shotgun, and is not afraid to use it!

OMG--my great-grandmother was good for saying "If it doesn't cure you it'll kill you..." And she was into using brandy for "cures" too..LOL

this is not new research I knew it 30 years ago, a glass of red wine, but the normal wine glass which is not full to the top, I have no either what a pony is is good for your health,

they studied the french who drink wine with their evening meal and found the health benefits back then,

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Wonder why it took our "scientific" teams to only discover it now...LOL.

myLot reputation of 93/100. winterose (18782)  4 years ago

you mean the research? it is at least 30 years old, but back when your grandmother said it,

well that is because research requires enough case studies, to see the correlations so that that many years and many subjects (people) to examine.

myLot reputation of 98/100. pyewacket (12221)   ranked 239 out of 32,944 in life  4 years ago

Not really my grandmother but great-grandmother who was born in 1875--she used to make her own dandelion wine too..said that was a cure-all for just about anything
