WALTER MATTHAU - What was his funniest film? email this discussion to a friend?

He only has to walk onto the screen and I swear I am laughing. He pulls back the corners of his mouth and looks at the camera as if to stay - does this guy think I'm stupid, or something? His early partnerhip with Jack Lemmon was not only memorable it was genuine and the pair successfully renewed their onscreen partnership years later... Walter Matthau left us with a shelf full of classic films, but my question is WHAT WAS HIS FUNNIEST FILM?

And you are asking MEE!!!

You expect me to say the Odd Couple, but actually, there is one better.

The Fortune Cookie, check it out Mart, it is one of my favourites.

Walter....hm hm! I mean Frank! I wasn't expecting you to name either of them. The Odd Couple is brilliant. How long did it take him to fugure out that the little notes he was getting signed FU were from Felix Unger:-)
... I love and hate the Sunshine Boys because George Burns and Walter are so annoying..., but I think my first choice is going to be Kotch, directed by his friend Jack and for which he got an Oscar. The look on his face in the back of the car, when he's being brought to the Retirement Home and he sees the old dears picking flowers in the garden....or how he always used German and French words speaking to his old Mexican Bowling Partner!... Priceless!:-)

The scene in the Odd Couple discussing the little notes signed FU was, I believe, the funniest scene in the whole movie. Whenever I think of the Odd Couple movie, it is that scene that springs immediately to mind. I actually have a co-worker with those same initials and every time she sends me an email or signs a memo with her initials I think to myself "Didn't you ever see the Odd Couple? How can you sign documents that way?"

I only saw your 3 week old second comment just now!
I don't believe it. She has the same initials! What a great story:-)
Thanks for that and all the best.

My choice would be the Odd Couple. I love that movie and still crack up laughing every time I watch it. He and Jack Lemmon were one of the great film partnerships that lasted over many years. Just this last week I was off work and watched the Odd Couple II (of course, not in the same class as the original Odd Couple), Grumpy Old Men, and Grumpier Old Men -- all of which were showing on cable. The humor in those films transcends generations.

Hello deem1977. Would you believe I have never seen the Odd Couple 2. May be I was afraid that like all sequels, that it would be a disaster. But I have seen the Grumpy Old Men films and as you said Jack Lemmon and Walter were again fabulous. I love the scene in the Odd Couple where Oscar is annoyed with Felix and instead of trying to stop Felix committing suicide, he opens the window and says he lied about how high up they are - in the hope that Felix would now jump:-)
