What Would You Do When Your Neighborhood Suddenly Becomes Unsafe?

My family is living in a nice neighborhood in the outskirts of the city. The place is cool and the neighbors are just okay. We have been living there for almost a year now and, not until last month, we like the place. One of the vacant lots near our lot is being occupied by a squatter of 5 children and an extended family. According to the people who knew them, they were evicted from their previous location having failed to pay for their rent for 2years already. And since they were the caretaker of this vacant lot near to us before, and the owner of this lot has gone abroad already, that is why they took over the property. I have a great concern about our safety because I have observe it that the men in this family are usually drunks when they get home, they yell a lot at each other and one time, I saw a policeman looking for the male head in the family. I was just terrified that it might have confirmed my worst fear about them. What would you do if we are in the same situation?

Personally I'd stay a long way away from them and never have eye contact. Keep all valuable things out of site get theft insurance and keep the cell phone and other phones in reach. They sound like they are already digging a hole let them keep digging. :)
