My newest neighbor just came over. Her name is Bea. She had a grocery bag full of yellow squash for me. MMmmmmmm what good eating. I know what I'm having tonight, lol. When they first moved in I was really sick and didn't feel good and having many problems. I wasn't able to go to them and welcome them here. I did buy a beautiful basket and bought several kitchen towels, a salsa bowl w/spoon and a few other things and put them in a decorative way in the basket. I bought a card and signed it telling them our names and phone number, and told them welcome to the neighborhood and that we hoped they enjoyed living here as much as we have for the past 11 years. That if they needed anything to just call us. My grandson took it over to them telling them I was sick and could not deliver it. But wanted them to have the basket. They mailed me a beautiful thank you card and it had all of their names in it. When Bea came over to give me the squash we talked for a good 30 minutes on my front porch. I offered for her to come in and she wouldn't. But we talked for awhile. She is really nice, we talked and laughed and had a very nice visit. I think it's funny though that she mention the ones no one likes on the street, which happen to be right next door to her. Anyone that know me has heard about this strange family. She wanted to know if I knew why they had that tall fence and wire around their property. I told her what I knew. She said they are not friendly people and never even have waved back to her. I told her not to feel badly it was nothing they had done that these people are just that way and not friendly people. She had thought of taking them some squash and thought better of it. These people across the street don't know what they are missing in the good neighbors around here. We will all help each other and have nice talks. Oh, well to each their own. Do you like yellow squash? I love it and I'm having some for dinner.

I like yellow squash too. I like it fried. I slice the squash and I slice an onion and I put them in a paper bag with flour, pepper and salt. Then I shake It real good so they will get coated real good, then I fry them until they are good and brown. They are so good. I can eat the whole pan. I haven't had any in a lot of years. Enjoy them.

Hi mc, I like them fried like that too. I also eat it boiled either with onions or not. I put spices and butter in and boil it til just before it's all apart, just getting tender. I love it fried though that's my favorite way to eat it.

Me too travi, I love it and could eat the whole amount I cook. I have to contain myself, lol. It's really sad that people don't do what you know is probably on their minds, meeting the new neighbors and greeting them. When I was first married oh 35 years ago the elderly lady next door came over and brought me two kitchen towels to welcome me. I thought that was so nice of her and what a good thing. It made me feel so good that she would do that for me. We were also really good friends despite the huge age difference. I being almost 17 and her in her 60's. I have kept this with me all this time just how good it make me feel that she would do that. So I want others to feel comfortable with moving to. I want them to have one good light time in the hustle and hard times of moving. Most are really leary of the new neighborhood and wonder what it's like there. So I try to let them have a nice moment. It makes me feel good to think or hope that they might feel as good as I did those many years ago when a nice lady gave me two dish towels. So I have done this everytime someone moves in near me where ever I have lived. I do think and hope as you said that Bea and I will be good friends.

Hi m, I hate moving. I've done it too much in my lifetime. It is a serious dread for me, as it sounds to be with you now. I do feel for you. I hope you have good neighbors where you are going. Best wishes for you in your move and the new neighborhood.

what a lovely neighborhood. I wish ours was more like that but it is not. Not even close. Sounds like you and your new neighbor might end up as friends and what a wonderful gift she brought you. I love squash. I could eat it every night and never get tired of it.

What a lovely story about your neighbor. I bet that was a great feeling and I think it is wonderful that you are keeping that tradition alive in your neighborhood. I bet that your new neighbors do get that same wonderful feeling that you got 35 years ago. I think that is so awesome.

I'm so glad you have good neighbors my friend. You are right besides having them to talk to they are their if you need something. One couple across from me took me to the hospital when I needed to go and had no other way. Instead of having a huge ambulance bill they were so kind to take me. They wanted to wait with me but I didn't want them to have to sit there for hours waiting. I told them I appreciated them and what they did and they could go home. I bought them a pretty thank you card and a huge basket full of plants for their yard. They said they had been wanting those and put them in the yard right away.

Wow, it's nice to have good and kind neighbors around. We have a couple of good neighbors too, but mostly, our neighbors are relatives. And I don't go out often or run around our place. Hmm... Hope I had neighbors like you around, so I could drop by for a chat or so. We'll probably have a great time. By the way, I love squash too. Hehe. Regards to your new neighbor, Bea. Take care!

Hi, it's good to have nice neighbours. Is it the culture/habit in your country to welcome new neighbours? When I was living in an apartment, I hardly know my neighbours, except to say 'hi, hello, goodbye' - that type of neighbour, friendly but not close. Now that we are now living in a house (a residential area of linked houses); our neighbours are rather the same. Except the 2 directly next to us. On the left hand side, is a family of grandparents, parents & children. The adults are nice - we exchange greetings, news, and sometimes food. The children would sometimes use our garden for their games (they have around 7-8 kids). On the right hand side, is a minor nightmare! It's a family of 4, parents & children. They are inconsiderate - their cars or friends' cars would be parked close to our gate, making entrance difficult. She plays the piano from early in the morning to late at night...rubbish thrown outside on the roads, and so on. So maybe one day I'd like to live in the mountains, so I don't have to worry about good or bad neighbours!

I don't know about all over, but I'm from the south in the US. In the south years ago people did this, not so much anymore. They do have welcome wagons in many communities to welcome a new comer or family to the area. So I guess yes, it is a common thing just depending on where you are. I too have a nightmare of a family living across the road from me. Their is the parents in one place and 2 more places with their daughters and their families. They are like you say the ones you have are. Playing load music all the time having trash all over that comes into everyones yard. They even throw trash in my yard, this irritates me.
