What is credit score?

My parents have a bad credit score. What is credit score? How can someone get a credit score? From my personal point of view, it is a score of your credit. Am I right? I am planning to get a credit card but I heard that one of the criteria in granting a credit card application is the credit score. Why? Thanks in advance!
