the gender of the Chinses Zodiac(animal sign),male,Why?

Yesterday I read a magazine,when they say about the Chinese Zodiac, they use Ox, Boar,Rooster,and so on,All the words they use is male, even I'm Chinese, I don't know why? Someone know about it, tell me please~~
