Organ donation |
| |
| My Mom's friends' grandson died today. He was only 17 and died from an infection that got into his brain. He is still on life support because he was an organ donor. They said they will keep him on life support until Friday to give the doctors the chance to harvest all the organs they can. I think this is a very nobel thing the young man did..being an organ donor. | | | | | |

| | yes I think it is a great thing to do, when we all know how so many people can be helped with one persons organs, it can make such a difference to the lives of other people... | | | | | | |

| | Seems that I heard somewhere that 70 or more people can benefit from one person's organ donation. That's alot of people. Even if just one person's kept alive it's worth it. | | | |

| | Yes it is. I am an organ donor. I figure I'm not going to be using them anymore. Someone else might as well. When I was 12 one of my classmates was hit by a drunk driver and later died. They donated everything they could. Because of that the casket had to be closed. So many people won't donate and I really don't understand why. I had a friend that told me once that they were her organs and no one else was going to get them. There is no telling how many lives that boy's life will save. | | | | | | |

| | You are correct. And with him being so young his organs are probably in really good shape. As far as I know he didn't have any health problems besides a glass eye. That's what killed him..he got an infection behind the eye that went to his brain. | | | |

| | That is just so sad to lose him at such a young age. Well any age it is hard to lose a child or grandchild. It is too bad. | | | |

| | It really is. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to my son. I know people get through it somehow but I can't begin to understand what they go through. | | | |

| | My thoughts go out to your mom's friend. It would be such a loss to lose a 17 year old as they have not yet lived life. I agree that donating one's organs is noble. It's really awe-inspiring to think that a person can save someone else's life upon his/her own death. Maybe even more than 1 person. In a way, the person who died lives on through those people who were "saved" by his organs. | | | | | | |

| | That is true. I've heard of some cases in which the donating family know the ones who receive the donated organs. I think this is rare though because it might cause problems with people wanting to hang on through the one who received the new organs. | | | |

| | Oh, I never thought of that. But, it makes sense that somehow, a person would feel a part of their loved one was living on. I guess there is a lot of confidentiality around that sort of thing. | | | |

| | I believe so from what I've seen on television about it. I think it's only very special cases where both families know each other. | | | |

| | well.... i think it is great that he is a organ donor... i was planning to be one... but the thing is that i am afraid that the doctor will just let me die as the other person has a higher chance of having staying alive or because he is richer than me so that is something that holds me back... but i will still donate blood... obviously!!! but.... i think i will still be a organ donor... | | | | | | |

| | I know things like that do happen but I don't believe it's very often. It is scary to think about though. Organ donation is a personal choice. Everyone knows how they feel about it and why. | | | |
