Like you said, your friend should've tried to encourage you also and respect your dreams. If they don't understand what you do, they should be honest enough to let you know they are not qualified to offer an opinion. The dream of being a writer like anything else, it is only a dream if you don't do it. Don't give up over one human being's opinion whatever you do.

What about workshops on writting skills? of have them write for some online places that give a pretty fair judgment of what they are looking for. I know several if you want to pass them on. Since these other sites are earning sites, I don't want to list them here (I believe that's against guidelines) but would be more than happy to provide those to you in a PM if you'd like.
No, I don't think anyone is stupid for having a dream. They just need the right tools to get them there.
