An American friend emailed me this information and I thought I would pass it on. I haven't checked with Snopes to see if it's genuine as I felt it is authentic. All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are being recalled. STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke ( bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication The FDA recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicine. The following medications contain Phenylpropanolamine: Acutrim Diet Gum Appetite Suppressant Acutrim Plus Dietary Supplements Acutrim Maximum Strength Appetite Control Alka-Seltzer Plus Children's Cold Medicine Effervescent Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold medicine (cherry or orange) Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine Original Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Cough Medicine Effervescent Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Flu Medicine Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold & Sinus Effervescent Alka-Seltzer Plus Night-Time Cold Medicine BC Allergy Sinus Cold Powder BC Sinus Cold Powder Comtrex Flu Therapy & Fever Relief Day & Night Contac 12-Hour Cold Capsules Contac 12 Hour Caplets Coricidin D Cold, Flu & Sinus Dexatrim Caffeine Free Dexatrim Extended Duration Dexatrim Gelcaps Dexatrim Vitamin C/Caffeine Free Dimetapp Cold & Allergy Chewable Tablets Dimetapp Cold & Cough Liqui-Gels Dimetapp DM Cold & Cough Elixir Dimetapp Elixir Dimetapp 4 Hour Liquid Gels Dimetapp 4 Hour Tablets Dimetapp 12 Hour Extendtabs Tablets Naldecon DX Pediatric Drops Permathene Mega-16 Robitussin CF Tavist-D 12 Hour Relief of Sinus & Nasal Congestion Triaminic DM Cough Relief Triaminic Expectorant Chest & Head Triaminic Syrup Cold & Allergy Triaminic Triaminicol Cold & Cough I just found out and called the 800# on the container for Triaminic and they informed me that they are voluntarily recalling the following medicines because of a certain ingredient that is causing strokes and seizures in children Orange3D Cold &Allergy Cherry (Pink) 3D Cold &Cough Berry 3D Cough Relief Yellow 3D Expectorant They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number on the box so they can send you postage for you to send it back to them, and they will also issue you a refund. If you know of anyone else with small children, PLEASE PASS THIS ON. THIS IS SERIOUS STUFF! DO PASS ALONG TO ALL ON YOUR MAILING LIST so people are informed They can then pass it along to their families. To confirm these findings please take time to check the following: http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/ppa/ PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN IN CASE THEY GIVE IT TO THEIR CHILDREN OR TO FRIENDS WHO HAVE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. I don't know if this has been posted previously....just thought it was better to be safe than sorry. Have you ever had in your possession drugs or other things that have been recalled?

Thank you so much. I had three things off that list in my cabinet! Things that my kids and my Dad who has a heart condition take. I will be passing this on.

To save money, just check the labels first, as unless they are very old, they shouldn't have the phenylpropanolamine in them. If they are very old, you should chuck them out regardless.

Hi MsTickle, this is scary and it is great that all these products are being recalled but you were right to place the warning as people could have already bought these medicines and they are in the cabinets being used at home. I live in the UK and haven't heard of this happening here yet but I will take onboard and check all medicines in my cupboards before I buy and also pass warning onto others. Thank you for sharing this with us. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi Ellie. I don't quite know what is going on. The info I posted is 2-3 years old but the product is still available. Best to check the ingredients of your own medications in your country and see the results. See Goodies response # 1 and check out the link there. It is current.

I got this email as well but thanks for spreading it around so others can view it as well. Sad thing though I was giving my little sister some of these medications just 2 months ago. Plus my husband takes the allergy medications that he bought over the counter. I will send this on again to those I missed.

I don't believe many of these products have it in them anymore since the early 2000's. Seems like there was hype about it about the time I was getting my disability and that was 2000-2001. It's most likely an old email that has been passed around for years. Chek the fds site if you want. xoxoxoxoxoxo

I think from memory, it applies to people who have an existing blood disorder. In Australia, all medications, whether prescription or over the counter have to undergo years of testing before they are approved as being safe. You did mention some products that we do use, but if this were really a big issue, it would have been all over the news here at the time, and I we didn't hear anything about it. Health and public safety are very important over here, so our media does get involved.

Hey Penny. I've not heard of sodium benzoate, what's the deal with that?

True. We're lucky, aren't we! Still, I'm a bit worried about preservative 211 (sodium benzoate) and am careful not to give it to my daughter except very rarely. It took our media a good six months to pick up on the problem with that.

If you actually read the FDA site this was from back in 2005. So yeah, back then it was relevant, but it has been taken off the market since.

Hi sedel...thanks for clearing that for us. While this info may be dated, the info supplied by goodie in response#1 is current...so it hasn't been removed. Go figure... http://www.medicinenet.com/phenylpropanolamine-oral/page2.htm

Jiminy cricket! That list there is almost all the type of nasal decongestants on the market today. I just thank my lucky stars that even though I've always had sinus problems I don't rely on any kind of medications whether prescribed or over the counter. I don't even take anything if I have a cold. But thanks for the heads up on this. But gee, what next? Everyday you hear of more medications being recalled

If you actually read the FDA site this was from back in 2000-2006. This has since been corrected, thankfully.

thanks for the warning. hemorrhagic stroke is a severe medical neuro-emergency and if you add aspirin in the menu, you'll be adding gasoline in a fire. It should be totally recall and post a warning to the public so as to flash out those who have them stored at home.

Oh yeah, i actually received that email too. It sounds pretty real to me. I have used some of the medicines such as Dimetapp and Robitussin before. I'll definitely be checking the labels before i use them again!
