Last night, my girlfriend and I watched a 2001 Japanese movie called "The Happiness of the Katakuris". We were expecting a pseudo-zombie flick, but got so much more than we bargained for!
It was one of the funniest things either of us has ever seen. By the first five minute mark, we had to pause to wipe the tears of laughter out of our eyes, and I had to run and empty my bladder because I almost lost it, laughing so hard.
This quirky family of four generations runs a bed-and-breakfast, but the guests keep dying for various reasons (none of which are the family's fault). They go to painstaking lengths to avoid bad business publicity, and hilarity ensues.
Did I mention it's a musical?!

I absolutely LOVE this movie, how great that someone has started a discussion about it!
Some things you may or may not know about the film:
It's actually a remake of a Korean (non-musical) movie called "The Quiet Family." I personally like The Katakuris a lot better.
The director, Miike Takashi, usually does movies that are very violent and would be borderline NC-17 in America. This was definitely a departure for him.
I think my favorite part is the zombie number. I have that song on my iPod. :)

Wow, I honestly didn't expect a response. I figured I was posting in Obscuresville. :)
We are totally planning on purchasing this movie for the home collection, and inflicting its hilarity on any of our friends who are willing!
Is The Quiet Family any good, btw? I would be interested to see this movie's inspiration, at least.

You should see The Quiet Family, yes. I just don't like it quite as much because it's not as hilarious, though it is a comedy it's darker. I didn't entirely sympathize with the family like I do with the Katakuris. But still it's interesting to see the original movie the Katakuris was based on.
