Hehe, my poor son. I took him to the doctors today and he was told he had an ear infection. The doctor spoke to and treated him like an adult, bearing in mind he is bigger than the doctor and will be 15 in just over 4 weeks time.
He said he would prescribe antibiotics, which pleased my son, as he just wants rid of the pain, and then asked how old he was.
Jake said 14, and the doctor said "what 14, 14 and a bit or what?"
Jake at this point looked a bit baffled, and then the doctor looked at me and I said he will be 15 in a few weeks.
So the doctor then says "Well because of your age I have to give the medicine form, but let me know when you are 15"...
Lol. Why did he ask about his age and how far over 14 he was if he was just going to give out the bright yellow medicine anyway? Wouldn't I'm 14 do it? Would it have made a difference if he was 14 and 364 day? :)
He then said to me "You can give him half or one paracetomel if you want to, to help him relieve the pain" :)
This made me laugh. He is nearly 15, and while I was at work, he had the sense to go to the medicine drawer, get the paracetomel and check the dosage for his age. They were 500ml ones, but he checked first to make sure he could take two of them. He is extremely sensible.
His face was a picture when told he was given medicine and then to have half a paracetomel. Lol. Like half of one is going to do him any good, as the poor kid was in agony with it.
We now have the medicine, which he has to take tomorrow while I am out at work. A big, clumsy teenager with medicine! Well, I watched while he poured himself a spoon out, spilt half of it trying to get it to his mouth and then licking it off of his trousers afterwards! I somehow think he would have been just fine with 1 tablet every 3 hours as we were expecting.
Anyway just wanted to share this with you, and see if anyone else had similar experiences?

Oh! I understand how your son felt, the pain, the muffered and the plugged ear. They are simply annoying! I had a rather serious infection weeks ago that I couldn't sleep for days. I was then hospitalized for further treatments with the prescription of antibiotics, allergies and pain relief medicine. On top of the pain relief I was given paracetamol as well. Thank God the pain had gone totally during my admission. Just the plugged feeling of my ear due to the otic ear drop to soften those debris/fungal to ease ear toileting/suction by the doctor. Yet, it was only 80% clear before I came back home.
So, I'm still on medication and the ear drop to cure my ear drum infection even though it's the 2nd week since I got it. Doctor said it's unlike other disease that can be cured in weeks. Just wonder if your son is totally cured now?

You poor thing. I am lucky and I don't seem to suffer with ear trouble, but after seeing what he has been through I feel for anyone that suffers with ear infections. We phoned up NHS direct for advice on the Saturday as he was suffering so bad and the medicine wasn't doing anything, so they said it sounded like a virus and thats why they weren't working which made sense. They told me to max out his pain relief, alternating ibuprofen with paracetomal and to take him back to the doctors on the Monday. When the doctor checked it the whole ear canal was also infected so he gave him a spray to use, which thank goodness seemed to have worked. Fingers crossed he has been pain free for the past 3 days now, and hopefully it has cleared. I need to take him back to get it checked again on Mon.
Hope yours soon clears up as it must be just horrible! Take care

Thanks for the concern, yeah, I revisited my doctor yesterday and he said my condition had improvement, the infection on my ear canal had almost cleared. Even though my ear drum looks better but there are still debris that need to cleared naturally, thus I shall continue applying the otic ear drop and see how it goes next week.
Hope for the best to your son too! Take care.
