Depending on the type of dog that you have, it is very likely that he/she will always have a "dog odor" smell. I have a beagle and it is typical that beagles and other hounds will have a stronger smell than, say, a poodle, which will have a light smell.

In order to get the smell out of the house as much as possible, though, it is important to remove the following things to the best of your ability:

1) Any shed pet hair. The smell will stay in the hair even after it is shed. Be sure to vacuum thoroughly.
2) Any and all waste. If there have been accidents or if your dog uses pee pads, it is important to rid your house of any urine or excrement. Be sure to use an enzyme cleaner; regular household cleaners will not work. I use
Nature's Miracle Stain & Odor Remover. Be sure to treat an area larger than the accident as urine will soak and spread into the carpet padding.

After these two steps, let your house air out for the afternoon. This is probably the best you're going to do. Keep in mind that all dogs smell at least a little bit. If your dog is new to the family, don't worry, you'll probably get used to it.

If you are worried about your guests being offended by the odor, restrict the amount of access your dog has to certain areas of the house. It may seem cruel to limit your canine buddy's movement, but, in actuality, the dogs can benefit from boundaries and rules and will make their restricted areas into a "den" of sorts. If you have a puppy, then you should definitely be keeping him/her in a pen, a restricted area or a single room for the majority of the day anyway.
