I called the IRS to get my tax information. And I was shocked as the call was answered by an Indian. He said his name was John. No problem, the US is culturally diverse so no worries. Just for giggles, I asked him where he was answering from, I was told that it didn't matter where he was. He could still assist me. ! ! ! WOW ! ! ! He had access to all of my information. After talking to him a bit, I did find out his real name, sorry can't pronounce it. He asked me if it was a problem, I told him that it does alarm me that my information is so easily accessed outside of the US. He told me that it was very safe, many security measures were in place. I hope so. Oh Man I hope so!

Well, I wouldn't necessarily say that the problem is the government outsourcing to another country. Rather, the problem is that the government is even outsourcing (to private firms) at all. Recently I read several articles speaking of how the government chose to outsource to private law firms to handle the IRS. Privacy concerns abounded.

I can understand that. But does that mean no one in America will do it? This baffles me.

Oh, actually my comment was pointing out that there are people in America who do it (i.e., the private law firms were in Iowa.) However, my point was that it really doesn't matter what country they're from--what matters is that the government is entrusting our data with a private firm. No matter where that private firm is located, it's still a private firm, and many people would not trust them with their data.

I would have thought that there would be some rule for keeping at least IRS information in the US. Don't get me wrong, I hate too many rules, but some things should be kept closer to home.
