I have an unusal surname but that is my husbands fault!! People have spelt it all different ways addding on letters where they needn't and it's an easy four letter name to pronounce. Anyway, once when I was taking my child to pre-school I noticed this childs surname which I thought was fantastic and I have not come across one like it since. The name was Squelch, I thought is was great, I dare say the kids will tease him when he gets older though.
Have you seen or heard any really unusual surnames that have stuck in your mind?

A boy in my school has been named Thirsty. I don't know why the parents wanted to name him like that. It seems that they have poor command of English language otherwise they would not have named him like that. They wanted to name him thirst but the parish priest objected explaining what the english word meant. So reaching a compromise he added the y at the end of the word to maek it sound like a normal name to the parents approval.

Hi ronaldinu
So I guess now when someone asks him his name he's going to say 'I'm Thirsty' and they are gonna say well go and get a drink then!! The teasing that kid must get as other kids can be really spiteful. As a parent I have done my best with my kids not to encourage bullies to have a go at them like a silly haircut or trousers too short etc. Why would a parent do this to their child? It seems a bit cruel and selfish!

This is more indirectly related to your question, but the other day I was surfing around on msn.com looking at the news. I came across an article about a New Zealand judge who had ruled that you can't name your child just anything (first name). The name is question was Talula wears a Hula I believe. She was 8 and was in the middle of a big custody battle. The court made her a ward of the state so that they could contest the name her parents gave her because it was so ridiculous. I have to agree, how could you name your child something like that? The girl even said that she never told anyone her real name. The article went on to list another crazy names that parents had given their children that had to be changed, and some that were admissable. One of the admissable ones was Number 16 Bus Station....I don't know why a parent would name a child that either!

Hi there smile44
That is not even funny, it really is downright ridiculous and people like that should be fined! Those poor children have to live a life of ridicule because there parents were clearly on something at the time. I could never have done that to my kids it's too cruel.
Thanks for your response
