Update and video of our "Mother Nature Sneeze" email this discussion to a friend?

Well for those who read my discussion about our "derecho" thunderstorm this past Monday 7/21/08 http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1616447.aspx here's a little update, picture and a video that I found on youtube.

Clean up still continues at a slow but steady rate. After 5 days many people on the other end of town are still without power, including a couple of people my husband works with and one of my best friends. Even our Super WalMart is still without power. We are helping where we can but it's mostly up to people with chain saws to cut up the downed trees and haul them away, the power company to replace the poles that were snapped in half and get the lines reconnected, and of course the contractors to repair the homes and business that were damaged.

I can't help but feel so incredibly lucky since we have no damage to our house and only a few broken branches and gutter damage in our neighborhood. We were only without power for 13 1/2 hrs which still amazes me. I fully expected it to be out for days.

Here's the video. This is only one family's property but very typical of the damage to our area. From the description in the video she only lives about 2 miles from me so you can see why I feel so very lucky. The picture I posted is of a power pole snapped in half a few blocks from our house.

I'd like to say that I would not even attempt to compare what we are going through to what those who live along the gulf coast are going through right now with the aftermath of hurricane Dolly. My heart goes out to them and I wish them a very quick clean up and recovery.

Wow craft! You are so lucky! It is unbelievable! Mother Nature
sure must be pissed to do something like that! I live in NY
and we have been relatively lucky with our storms so far. Not
to say it can't happen here, because it can. Our problems are
winter storms with ice and snow. Although lately we have been
having alot more scary rain storms. In fact we got the
aftermath of your derecho I think. We had this strange, wild
loud thunderstorm that was like no other I have ever heard!
Scared the poop out of me! I don't scare easiy, but I have
never heard thunder like that before. Now I need to check on
my mom because she lives in Ft. Launderdale, Fl and she had
Dolly. I think her area was ok, at least I hope so. No news is
good news!sad

Hi Opal! Yep seems Mother Nature has been a bit upset over the last few weeks. Here's a short video of the huge lightning storm that hit us just a few weeks ago, WOW what a light show THAT was. Pretty but very scary. I'm glad someone got it on video because it is just too hard to describe and make it believable! From what you described it sounds like you got some of the same.

I sure hope your mom is ok. From what I could see Florida didn't get hit very hard, it was mostly Texas that too the brunt of Dolly.

We've still got a lot of summer to go but hopefully the worst of the storms is done for the year. I hope I hope I hope. doh lol

Uhhhggg tornados! They do like to throw your stuff around, it's what they do best [emlol[/em]! I'm glad you found your albums. Those are things that can't be replaced. Even if they did get a little muddy.

Everybody around here kept saying that we got hit by a tornado but the weather service says there was no tornado, just very high straight line winds and downbursts. Personally I think if we'd had a real tornado there would have been less damage! Thanks for stopping by my friend!

you are probably right less damage or coulds have been more never know but thise straight line winds can really play havoc too.
The one that hit us went 15 miles on the ground a mile wide and took down over 2,000 trees. really there was 3 tornadoes came together
