I love old movies. |
And when I say old movies, I mean OLD MOVIES, from day one, in 1895 when the first motion picture was filmed. I like silent pictures, I like stuff from the 1930s, I like film noir when it was really noir, I like the golden age of Hollywood. In fact, I almost feel offended when old Hollywood gets ignored. I see rip-offs of old movies all the time purporting to be new ideas. Is anyone with me?

1. penny64 (478) | 3 months ago | I love old movies too, although I rarely get a chance to see them. Silent movies were a totally different art. The acting is a mixture of mime and emotion. Many of them are quite beautiful, although I can never remember the names of ones I've enjoyed. It's interesting that you say that you see rip offs. I've not noticed, but then again, I haven't seen enough. I have noticed that Japanese films are often copied.

beeeckie (307) | 3 months ago | Have you ever seen "A Fool There Was" starring Theda Bara? If you love silent films, especially emotional ones, that is one to see! Also "It" starring Clara Bow. There is a trend in America now to remake Japanese films, esp. horror films. I wish they would just subtitle-and-release the originals, because they are inevitably better.
| |
penny64 (478) | 3 months ago | To be honest, I don't remember. I haven't seen many in the past ten years at all. I do love Clara Bow, so quite possibly I have seen the one with her in it. Now you have reignited my interest, I'm going to keep an eye out for those two. Thanks:) I agree - the originals are usually better. I don't really understand why the US in particular has to remake so many movies and tv shows. It's like the producers think their American audiences are too stupid to appreciate other cultures. I thikn producers should give Americans more credit!!
| |
beeeckie (307) | 3 months ago | I always felt it was the other way around...American producers don't have enough faith in other cultures...it is very interesting to hear it from an Australian:) Did you know this autumn they're going to be redoing Kath and Kim (or whatever it's called) on US TV?
| |
penny64 (478) | 3 months ago | Yes, I meant American producers don't respect Americans! I do know that they remaking Kath & Kim. I really don't know if that will work, because a lot of the humour comes from us Australians laughing at ourselves. It's a little like My Name at Earl pokes fun at a certain American demographic, and Everybody Loves Raymond pokes fun at another. I honestly think that you guys would enjoy the Aussie version of Kath & Kim much more than a remake. I've seen parts of the US version, and the characters are all really attractive and normal ... it's like the US producers missed the point. One US remake that I think worked is The Office. I saw the UK version first and loved it. When I heard it was being remade for America, I thought "oh no", but I've seen it and it's good. It has been cleverly changed and rescripted so that it is an American show, not a revamped English show.

beeeckie (307) | 3 months ago | Aah, sorry, I get it now:) It was pretty late at night so I got the countries mixed up! And yes, it's true. I am looking forward to Kath & Kim but I would prefer seeing the original to know what it's based on, at least! The production design at least LOOKS like a lot of Australian shows I've seen.

2. darkjedi (2090) | 3 months ago | Hey beckie:D I like some old movies, mainly the older sci fi and horror movies. I love the wolfman, dracula, frankenstein, all of those are absolutely great. Plan 9 from outer space, The day the earth stood still, war of the worlds, ive also read the book. I know not as old as you like but still old, and not many people now a days watch them. I know what you mean though about remade movies that hollywood is recycling that 90% of the time is absolute crap. They are remaking the wolfman, it will suck im sure. Pagan and Proud

beeeckie (307) | 3 months ago | Embarrassingly enough, I have not seen most of the 1930s Universal horror movies. Only The Mummy, lol. I know, I'm such a hypocrite! The Day The Earth Stood Still should be required viewing in U.S. high schools, it is extremely relevant. I know ppl don't like it though, cause it makes us think about how we are paranoid as a society.
| |
darkjedi (2090) | 3 months ago | Oh yes forgot about the mummy lol, dont know how lol. You should see them sometime. Yes I agree it should be required viewing. Sigh they are also remaking that too,:(. Hell if I was an alien species out there watching us, I sure as hell wouldnt want to make contact with how paranoid we are, just watch our tv and movies and you will be scared lol.

| 3. adobe4578 (63) | 3 months ago | totally with you, I think that old films still have so much to teach todays filmmakers. the pioneers of silent films like Fritz Lang, Carl Dyser and D.W. Grifith are more amazing to me than todays big name diretors.

4. philjas (783) | 3 months ago | I am a lover of classic movies, and when I say classic I mean OLD. LOL Hitchcock is my favorite, I generally love anything that's a suspense/mystery, film noir (an genre that really doesn't exist anymore except for a few rare exceptions.) My favorite classic era actor is James Cagney, actress Rita Hayworth, and in the silent days nobody beat Lon Chaney. My favorite silent film that I really recommend is "The Unknown" starring Chaney and a very young Joan Crawford. It's weird, short, and fascinating.

beeeckie (307) | 3 months ago | The Unknown is in our Blockbuster queue! And yes, film noir is dead, IMO, except every now and then someone revives it for one movie and then it promptly dies again:(

darkjedi (2090) | 3 months ago | I love Hitchcock, his movies are absolutely great.

penny64 (478) | 3 months ago | I love Hitchcock too. His methods of building suspense are still standard today, and you never grow tired of them. He was so good at manipulation - he manipulated his actors as well as his audiences.

philjas (783) | 3 months ago | Beckie we definitely seem to have similar taste in movies! Hitchcock fans, what's your favorite of his films? Mine is Psycho.

6. umart13 (300) | 3 months ago | Hi beeeckie, can you list some of your favorite old movies? When I saw your discussion the first title that came to my mind was Ninotchka with Greta Garbo. It was a one of her first talkie movies. I have not seen it in quite a while, but it still left an impression. If you are giving me the whole of the 1930s to chose from then I will zip to the end and take Goodbye Mr. Chips. Otherwise I will choose any Bogart, Cagney or E.G. Robinson (Little Caesar 1931) film you can mention. Regards. Umart

beeeckie (307) | 3 months ago | Oh man, I love so many movies from the beginning of MAKING movies, I would have to write a really, REALLY long list. Bogart rocks, though.:) Ever see The Petrified Forest?
| |
umart13 (300) | 3 months ago | Hallo beeeckie. I did not think that I had seen the Petrified Forest (1936), until I googled it. As soon as I saw the picture of Leslie Howard, I knew that I had. It's been a long time though. It's black & white in more than one sense. The all-wholesole Howard against the no-good hoodlum Bogart. Even Wickipedia defines it as "pre-film-"noir! Interesting that Bogart was not generally happy about being typecast in his early roles, but he was willing to do this one later as a TV production in 1955... Have you seen Leslie Howard in Intermezzo? Another Hollywood Great without an oscar:-(
| |
beeeckie (307) | 3 months ago | Did you know that Leslie Howard threatened the studio about The Petrified Forest, in that if they didn't cast Bogart, he (Howard) wouldn't star for them?:) As Bogart himself said later, "There's a reason my daughter's name is Leslie." I find the 1930s Hollywood flicks particularly fascinating because of the Depression, and how much glitz and comfort was inserted into movies to help morale across the country.
