Actually, my mom's first cousin, Juanita (who passed away on February 27, 1987, just a month short of her 80th birthday--which would have made her 101 had she not passed on), invented the smiley-face because she was always signing her letters with it way back when she was young.
Of course, she wasn't the one who made it famous!Besides, it wasn't the little yellow smiley-face that first became famous back in the late 1960s or early 1970s.
I know that, when I started college in the fall of 1971, one of my t-shirts had a big smiley-face on it (of the familiar yellow kind that, eventually, spawned a growing variety of expressions such as we see today floating around in Cyberspace!

I think a smiley is judst some kind of computer manipulation-there people who make living doing just that, they are basically animations that depict human mood!

According to Wikipedia.org it is Harvey Ball, a commercial artist in Worcester, Massachusetts the wiki added that " He devised the face in 1963 for insurance firm that wanted an internal campaign to improve employee morale." Hmmm that's very interesting isn't it ?
well, I would agree to the idea of improvement, surely, whenever one adds a smiley on her/his posts it conveys her/his point.
.. and I think it is brilliant for the owners/ creators of mylot who come up with smileys that needs to be earn before posting 'em.
