I have never traveled by train but we are considering taking small trips by train to some of our favorite places. Have you ever traveled by Amtrak?

Yes, I have traveled on Amtrak and I thought that the seats were comfortable and there was lots of leg room. I found the stations were in convenient locations and I met some friendly people whilst traveling. Twice my train was delayed and I arrived many hours late. The first time I the train was running five hours late and so I arrived at midnight. Amtrak gave me a free taxi ride for half an hour to my accommodation. The second time I arrived in Los Angeles at just after midnight. Luckily the buses ran to Santa Monica at that time of the month. I advise looking at Amtrak's website because I got some excellent value fares that way.

When I was a kid, my mother and I (she didn't drive until she reached 30) took the train all the time to visit relatives. I've ridden Amtrak several times and love it. It is slower than flying, but it is now cheaper. The food is great, the drinks are great. I'm considering checking out the routes between Flagstaff (there's an Amtrak station there) and Toronto. Last year I flew my wife down here from Toronto for under $400 round trip. Next month, my round-trip up there cost me over $700

Not yet, In Canada our train of choice is Via Rail. I'm thinking of going up to Montreal one of these months, when I have the money. I have family up there, and I would really like to record my hubad's and my marriage in the family Bible which is at my Aunt's house in Montreal.

Nope, unfortunately we don't seem to have any stations near enough to us. We'd pretty much use our "vacation budget" just getting to a station with gas prices the way they are. The rates for the actual train trips seemed really reasonable though. I think it would be a fun adventure and maybe someday it will be more feasible for us.
