| Do you consider the tactics used by the " Dog Whisperer " to be a bit unethical? | | | | My friend who is a pet loving vegan was offended that Ceasar " domineers " the animals and actually used choke chains. Although i would not personally do that, i cannot deny his animals are all well behaved and appear to be very happy... Am i not seeing something ??? | | | | | | | | | | Ask a Dog Vet Online Now 8 Veterinarians Are Online! Ask a Question, Get an Answer ASAP. JustAnswer.com/Dog

| | I do not know who Caesar, the dog whisperer, is so I don't know his methods. However, if a choker chain is put on correctly - not upside-down like a lot of people accidently put it on - it does not choke a dog. You give it a little tug and it tightens slightly but loosens again straight away. Really, it is less cruel than using a bit in a horse's mouth and some big dogs do need a choker chain to train them. If used properly, the dog will feel the choker chain tighten slightly but NOT to the point of choking and they quickly learn not to pull ahead or how to change direction when you give a GENTLE pull on the lead. | | | | | | | | dogperson (73)

| | We have a pack of 12. I am the leader. Do I dominate? Sure, I have too. With out a leader there would be chaos. Look at a wolf pack. How many leaders do we see? One. Milan is the leader of his group and he shows them leadership and love and respect and so on. Using a choke chain, as noted by another, there is a wrong way and a right way. Milan uses verbal corrections and leash corrections, depending on the dog and the problem. Not sure how many have been next to or behind a K9 dog in training, but the use of a choke chain and strong leash is the one and only thing that a trainer has to control the dog with at times. Voice commands are fine, but when a dog reaches a point they do not hear any more and need a physical correction. Using the chain and leash saves one from a reaction or adrenaline bite. I have had a few bite me, not in anger but merely a reaction, the K9 dogs in training, because I used my hand to get their attention and not the leash and collar. Any reputable and knowledgeable trainer will adjust the methods used on a dog. We also should remember that dogs bodies have evolved from mostly working dogs and the shoulder and neck area are very strong and resilient and a tug now and again on a choke chain, properly sized and fitted, will do no harm. The same is true of pinch collars. They are a tool, to be used with dogs that do not understand the corrections with a choke chain. People will leave the pinch on and it is not fitted corrected and it serves no use. Used properly it serves to re-enforce what is being taught and then when the lesson is learned the collar should be removed and not used again, unless there is a relapse in the learning. | | | | | | | Paradise for Pets Outdoor yards for fun in the sun and temp. controlled runs at night. www.paradise4pets.com | add comment | | | |
