Here are some frugal vacation tips that I ran across: http://www.organicallyinclined.org/2007/08/22/frugal-tip-of-the-day-5-frugal-vacation-tips/ Please share some things that you do to make your vacation have a little less impact on your budget.

On our last vacation we rented a 3 bedroom condo with my sister and her family. The kids had one room to themselves and each couple had their own room. It was great cooking meals with my sister and hanging out in the living room in the evenings together. It was also much cheaper than if each family got their own room.

That sounds like a lot of fun! We have also found that a lot of places greatly reduce their prices on off season. For example, in the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, you can get a great deal on a lake-side condo in the winter. Most people wouldn't be interested, but I'm not particularly a summer/water person, so I enjoy sitting inside by a roaring fire in the fireplace and looking out over the snow!

I actually live not far from Lake of the Ozarks. I've always heard from people that have 2nd homes there that winter is a beautiful time to go and it's not so croweded with tourists. Shh...maybe we better keep that a secret for the locals!

I have a Frugal Vacation tip: Stay Home! Lol, just kidding. I'm going to check out the site you listed, even though I am really not going away.

Some of the tips work for just a day long outing - such as taking along your own drinks and snacks instead of buying single items from convenience stores or vendors at attractions.

We own a timeshare, so when we go on vacation, the condo is already paid for. I always buy groceries the day we get there so we have food in the unit. This way the kids aren't begging to go out for lunch and dinner...we already have the menu planned out for the week. We do plan the nights out in advance too. I always buy ice cream bars to keep in the condo as snacks too, so the kids don't complain about not getting ice cream from the ice cream truck.

Anytime you can keep from going out to eat or buying individual snacks or sodas, you can safe money. We take a cooker with drinks just about everywhere we go, even if it's just for the day.

We don't travel by air much, but when we travel by car, we will eat a large breakfast before we get on the road and then just have a snack for lunch, and then eat summer after se get settled into a hotel for the evening.

We just got back from a short 3 day 2 night trip to an amusement park. We went on Sunday night so the rates were cheaper. We got a package deal from the hotel that included our park tickets, breakfast each morning and they had a pool so the kids could be entertained at night. We found a location close to alot of resteraunts and stores so we didn't have to drive far or out of the way to get something to eat. We had 2 gift certificates to a resteraunt chain so we ordered take out and ate in our room. We could bring drinks and snacks into the amusement park so we had those with us from home. The trip was perfect and we hardly spent any money but then our kids are young 3 and 5 so we could get away with not spending too much money. They had a blast and we didn't go over budget.

I think it is probably going to be possible to get a lot of good deals over the next several months - so many people aren't taking vacations and the tourism business is suffering. They will be getting creative and offering specials to draw business.
