I think karate is actually called "wu shu".

Its kind of martial art originate from japan which gai their populars in many countries around the world.

It is a martial art originating from Okinawa. It developed from a synthesis of indigenous Ryukyuan (Okinawan) fighting methods and southern Chinese martial arts. Kara-te means empty hand literally (was known originally as To-de which means Chinese hand before 1930s)

Karate is known primarily as a striking art, featuring punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques. However, grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restrains, throws and vital point striking are inherent to the art.

Karate. It is originated from Okinawa in Japan. Some reasearch says that Karate actually developed from Ryukyuan fighting methods and southern Chinese martial arts.

In our era, Karate has been divided into 3 parts of training, Kihon (basic), Kata (forms), Kumite(sparring). (I am not going into details about it.^.^)

So now, lets break down into parts. Karate can be divided into Kara and Te. Since it is said that Karate was derived from China, Kara is a Tang Dynasty (Simply put.."China"). And Te means hands. The meaning of "Chinese hand" or "Tang hand," “Chinese fist” or "Chinese techniques," reflected the documented Chinese influence on Karate.

But in early 1933, Japan's invasion of eastern China Gichin Funakoshi (known as the father of modern karate) began using a homonym of the kanji character "kara" by replacing the character meaning "Tang Dynasty"(?) with the character meaning "empty". So now you can say that Karate means "Empty Hand", "Empty Fist" or any other relevants.
