Are salt water fish hard to take care of??  | | | |  We are wanting to get a huge fish tank and we have seen a lot of fish and most of the ones we like are salt water. So how hard are they to take care of?? is there anything special we have to do with the tank , besides use salt water, like clean it a lot or something. I do not want too much work. I already have kids and a house to take care of.

Oh my, now in our experience they are very hard to take care of. I purchased my husband an Aquapod tank for Christams. WOW he loved it, started assembling it right away.. purchased a shrimp, a clean-up crew, later a clown fish, starfish.
Chemical kits, all the accessories, spent alot of time getting the levels of the water correct... Finally we were able to start adding fish.. they reccommend a few months to establish the tank before you add fish, which we did. Have live rock in there, added a flame angel, a gobie, another clown.. etc. Checked all the water levels, they were great! A few days later all the fish were DEAD.. YUP Dead!, So we start the tank over... same process.... Guess what? Second group of fish.. DEAD.. YUP DEAD! We called the fish place, said do this do that... same process, guess what DEAD FISH!
We have spent over 600.00 in fish, the tank was almost 800.00, so 1400.00 later, I have a starfish, a shrimp and a clown.
So in our case it is very hard, we have a two year old, so it makes it even harder. Doing water changes, testing the water.. etc.
Do some research, maybe we should have done more!

| |  Wow! salt water fish is so colorful compared to fresh water, I've heard they are hard to maintain but I never knew it would be really that hard! I really need to do a lot of reading before trying this one. Thanks Nanciem for sharing your experience.

It is very difficult, I say do not invest as I have been there, they are beautiful I do agree, but so difficult.

I've never had one, but it's my understanding that there is a lot more equipment required and it's more expensive, and the fish are too. I don't think it's the same as having a small 20 gal fresh water tank.
I'd suggest investing in a good book or two (you could check at your local library), and of course there would be unlimited online resources available to you.
They are beautiful and it was a dream of mine at one time too. Good luck...
