Art class ideas?

First let me explain that I posted this in the general area to try and get the greatest variety of responses. The elementary school that my youngest two kids go too does not have an art program. This was very upsetting to me so I have become the volunteer art teacher for at least the boys class (I haven't talked to the other teacher yet to see if she wants to do it too). This means the as of right now I will be teaching third graders art every fri. I loved it when I did this last year and the kids really seemed to like it too. Here's the issue...while trying to get this years projects planned I have started to run out of third grader friendly ideas. That's where you wonderful people come in. I would love it if you would share any ideas or even projects that you remember liking as a kid around that age. Any idea would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Ok so art is something that is completely not a talent of mine but, I can remember the older boys in third grade and they have my artistic ability which is ZERO. The third grade was the dreeded tee pee. The art teacher I believe was trying to make me kill her that year lol. This was an at home art assignment. So the child tells me this assignment the night before it was due because the teacher didn't send home any sort of paper about this, I went to the craft store to buy things that I thought one would need for making this darn tee pee, but when I got there I thought OH I bet they have a kit for this (because I seen all the other kits) so I had to find a sales clerk. The worst mistake, why do the people at the craft store think that all the people that come in there are crafty? Is crafty even a word? I don't know. So I ask, where would you keep the tee pee kits? Kits? Yes, kits. We don't sell those. OH. Point me in the direction of dowel rods. Why would you want dowel rods for a tee pee? Now, I am thinking to myself what is wrong with this idiot, hasn't she ever seen a tee pee before this point in her 800 year life. She had to be on the plains with the Native Americans she was that freakin old. I calmly state for the poles. Why would you want to buy them just go to the park and pick up sticks. Now, at this point I have wasted over 20 minutes with this woman and I've lost control. I respond, hmmm it's 730 pm and it's pouring down rain, does it look like a day to go to the park? I walked away it was much better than punching her for her foolishiness. By 8 we are walking out with our dowel rods which were about $2. Ok at this time I worked and I made about ten times that amount an hour, it was so worth the money lol. So we finally get home and the boy says I don't know what to do. I tried really hard to show him but that was pointless. Let's just say, I got a "B" on the tee pee. lol. Ok so I've really not given you any ideas as to what to do for your art class, BUT, I have given you an idea what NOT to do to your class lol.

Actually no you gave me a great idea for class but I will be doing it with them step by step and I know an easy way to do it. My teacher made us do one in 4th grade. We took or little paper cone that was still flt and colored on it, then we glued popsicle sticks to the back. Once it was was dry we taped th ends of the paper together and it only looked like the popsicle sticks were holding it up. Thank you. By the way you were very right to be annoyed at that lady. I see so many desperate faces that are just wanting to find an easy way to help their kids.I must say I think I would have had to say something to that old lady you are a stronger woman than I am. And yes "crafty" is a word.

P.S. If you ever have a project like that and need an idea on an easy way to do it feel free to message me. For some reason it seems that I was born with some really weird ability to figure out how things are put together. I just don't have a gift for coming up with original ideas.

I would love for my children to have you as an art teacher. The one they currently have is pretty good but of course they don't like her because she's an art teacher and it's something that they are not good at. That is a pretty easy idea the way that you are going to do it. I will keep you in mind, art is something that this house is completely lacking in abilities Have fun teaching!
