I just "found" a mature pecan tree and peach tree on my property! |
| |
| I was out watering my newly-planted bushes, trees and flowers when I noticed "things" growing on two mature trees outside. One of them I actually thought was an overgrown weed!!! I have a pecan tree near the beginning of our driveway and a peach tree (get this!) right outside our bedroom window!!! I was going to cut down the "overgrown weed" because it keeps brushing against the screen when it's windy outside. I was looking at it from the bedroom window when I saw what looked like a baby peach growing on it. I went outside and this thing is loaded with them!!! I can't imagine anyone actually planting a peach tree one foot away from the house so maybe a squirrel buried a peach pit there and forgot about it. I had to look up the other tree. I thought it was walnut at first, but they are round and smooth when unripe. These had four 'sections'. Yep, it's a pecan tree! Have you moved to a new place and "discovered" things like this growing on your property that you didn't know about? It's so exciting! Well, if you love gardening like I do, it is. If you have, what did you find? Have you eaten any of it? I'd love to hear more stories like this. It's like finding buried treasure! Please share! | | | | | |

| | Wow, that's quite a tale. It makes me want to check out all the trees (weeds) that are around my property. I live in an area surrounded by trees and all kinds of vegetation. I wouldnt be surprised to find some kind of similar thing on my property. I already have found a rose plant blooming that I thought was dead. | | | | | | |

| | Plants are strange things! I had a few things that I thought were dead, too, but surprised me by springing back to life. One of my rose bushes did exactly what yours did! We bought a house with 3 1/2 acres. Two acres are pretty open and the rest is wooded. We share a private road and, one day, I decided to take a walk along the road, at least the part of it that runs through our property, and I found wild raspberry and blackberry bushes. But they are almost everywhere in the woods, so I didn't think it was any big thing. We've lived here since May of last year and I JUST noticed these trees! LOL I guess I've been a little too busy this past year! I'm glad things have slowed down because I might just find something else! Take a look around your property and see if you find anything. I think it's so cool to find things like this! | | | |

| | Now that I finally know it's not a weed, I've started watering it! I can't wait to reach out my window and grab my first peach! Once I stood back from the pecan tree and looked at it, I saw that it was literally LOADED with pecans! Now, if I can only keep the squirrels away from them. Hmmm... I'm going out of town for a couple of days (the trip is starting in about 3 hours from now) so I won't be here to water it, but nature is supposed to be taking care of that while I'm gone, so that works out quite well! | | | |

| | Put 'cayanne pepper' around the base of the tree, squirrels hate this spice, & they should stay out of the tree...Lori | | | |

| | OMG I'd love to have a peach tree next to my house. It's possible somebody was walkin around the house eatin a peach then dropped it & not payin attention stepped on it pressin it into the ground. Peach pits sprout fairly easily. I moved into a house many years ago that had a beautiful white rose bush. My next door neighbor had a beautiful red rose bush. The first summer after I moved in my white roses has tiny red spots on them. Tiny like the tip in a pin. By the second summer there were definite red splotches. By the third summer I had red roses with white spots. I found it interesting to watch the transformation over the years. I would have liked to visit the next summer to see what had transpired but I had moved far enough away it wasn't feasible. Where I live now there was a scupernong bush growing. Every spring I get little suckers popping up in a 3 foot radius of the bush. I really should get out there in the spring & transplant a few of them. This year it was way too dry for them to live & I don't like killing any living thing. | | | | | | |

| | I think it was the bees cross polinating the roses & our bees seemed to have disappeared. I had 2 years of beautiful mottled roses. I was always interested it they ever turned back white after a few years or if the red totally took over. I did enjoy sitting on my porch & watchin them bloom to see what I was getting. I love watching nature reveal itself before my very eyes. Unfortunately, a 10 hour drive to look at a rose bush was not feasible. Oh I forgot to say, the neighbor's red roses were turning white as my white roses were turning red. Scuppernongs are extremely delicious...very sweet They do nothing until about late August or early September then you can't pick them fast enough. I think the suckers came from the seeds that fell to the ground from the ones I never got picked. Scuppernong jelly is another tasty treat. Can't think of anything better than hot buttered toast with scuppernong jelly for breakfast. Only comforting fact is I've only got one month before they arrive (smiling) | | | |

| | Well, with the exception of wild blackberry and raspberry bushes, I've had to plant everything else myself. I planted all kinds of fruit trees and nut trees, strawberries, kiwis, blueberries, asparagus, a large and still growing herb garden and the annual veggie garden. I've also planted inedible things like roses, lilacs, privacy bushes, bamboo (well, I'll be eating some of the shoots from that), and tons of perennial flowers. I had the initial impression that nothing grew here but weeds! It was so nice to find those two mature trees, since all my other trees were either planted last year or this year and are still quite small. The trouble is that I planted two other peach trees last year! I'm going to be overrun with peaches! LOL | | | |

| | PEACH/PECAN CARIMAL PIE, Now that sounds a good thing for you and me to sit down there near the water and eat on a summers night, well if not me then you will have to take "HIM", rats. I missed big time again. Split peach/s (De-pip) in half and lay on shallow tin tray, sprinkle sugar over peaches and bake, serve hot with a dollop of ice cream/double thicken cream. Then go make mad love by the lake. Thats how good they are like that. You can also use the pecans in green salads, also potato/celery/apple/pecan and Mayo. I do hope you get a crop from them, HICCUP/ | | | | | | |

| | O.k. first I am so jealous! Second to answer your question yes we were clearing an old piece of land we used to own when we found this neglected pepper plant. I don't know the name of the peppers but they were really little and and hot as H E L L . My hubby loved them and made saving that plant his personal mission. When we left it was huge and very full. We were very sad to find out that the new owners let it dye. Congrats on the great finds. | | | | | | |
