I was talking just this afternoon with my new student. She's from another country but she spent several months here in my country so that her sons can study English. It has become a trend for them to go abroad just to learn English. It's like the whole country is going English crazy and kids as young as 9 years old and some even younger are sent overseas to study. Some moms would go with their kids. Some of them, mom's included would take several months off from work to do the same thing. Will you allow your kids to go abroad for 2-3 months to do just that? Why or why not?

I suppose that it would depend on your situation. English is my native language, so obviously I would not send my children abroad to learn English. If Chinese became the standard language, or the language that my children would need to learn in order to be successful in the world of the future, I would definitely look into ways to teach them Chinese. Being in the States, though, I would not have too much difficulty locating a tutor who would be able to teach Chinese to my children.
Do you think that the internet has opened language learning possibilities, so that people do not need to go abroad if they simply have internet access?

True. Technology has made it easier for us to access information and facilitate learning. I didn't have to go to another country in order to learn English. That's why even if it's good for my country's economy, still I find it a bit baffling why they're so English crazy. But I also benefit from it because I teach some of them through the phone.

English is, currently, one of the big languages for communication in science and industry, so I definitely understand the desire to teach their children English. Life is much easier, then, and they have many more advantages if they wish to leave the country or are involved in business with an English company.
I was told that the big language to learn used to be French.
