My Mom's Kidneys are Failing

My mom's kidneys are failing from Diabetes. The doctor told her today that she has 35 % of the use of her kidneys. Does anyone know if this is reversible? What percent of your kidneys do you have to have in order to be on dialysis? I don't know much about this.
