Olympic Stabbings |
| |
| Todd and Barbara Bachman, both tourists and former Olympian Elisabeth Bachman (wife of men's volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon) were stabbed by a Chinese man while they were visiting a popular tourist site in Beijing, China. One has survived the other did not of the couple. Chinese tour guide with the Americans was also stabbed and injured. Tang Yongming, 47, from Hangzhou, China is alleged to have been the attacker and reports are claiming he leapt to his death from a second floor of the tower where the attack took place. The couple were enjoying the marvels of Drum Tower 13th century imperial structure a little North of The Forbidden City. What I find is odd is that until the Olympics, China would proudly display on their official tourism webpages how the Chinese Government *guarantees* the safety of any traveler/visitor/tourist to China. Now I can no longer find this guarantee. So basically China has a floating safety policy? | | China's Flag | | | | |

| | Thank you Barb42 for your thoughts. You know how I appreciate them. :) Typically all tourist "hot spots" including hotel rooms are under Chinese govt survelliance regardless. I mean it *is* a Communist Country. I learned this from the Chinese Govt's website in the tourist information area, when I was researching China two years ago to go as a tourist. Kinda creeped me out. But then again, pretty much everywhere you go is under survelliance.... I think the Chinese tour guide wasn't really mentioned in the USA press because...well...shoot...he isn't American. And thus not noteworthy. :(\ For myself, I don't care where a person is from. I think everyone deserves dignity and respect. I'm wondering if China has some of the historical restrictions such as we do in places in the USA. For example, I may only choose certain paint types (usually 3) if I paint my home here in the French Quarter, LA, USA because I live in an International Historical Area. *giggles* Bet they would rather forget the infamous history of my place though. | | I only caught it as a quick note on several news shows, so I am not sure if they ever mentioned the tour guide or not. But I would like to hear the whole story when they tell us something. Didn't know about the 3 choices of paint in the French Quarters. I've been down there a few times but never knew that. | | | |

| | I'm sorry for the confusing. My home has a limited choice of 3 possible colours. LOL | | | |

| | That is pretty much it. I won't get into accent colours or fixture colours. Nor will I say what we call the historical group that enforces the "law". LOL | | | |

| | ROFL No, not all are women. Actually tends to be mostly men. They tell us what we can and can't do in the French Quarter. Which is odd, because they are oooo New Orleans: Totally on the take. LOL I will spill it - Vieux Carre` Nazis. They are very oppressive and will ignore both the public and private trespassing laws, ignore the Napoleonic Code we live under as well. A good friend of mine has been battling them for years over his businesses and his homes. You would think the Vieux Carre` Commission would be happy that some have taken their millions and restored places back to their original condition... Wow, we really have deviated from the topic. I guess that is what good conversation is about. :D | | | |

| | I am proud to say I have been removed from his presence many times. Usually at Wine Charities. In case you haven't been able to tell, I tend to speak my mind. Right after I double check my facts. :D Honestly, I am really looking forward to moving up North. My boyfriend and I have been delaying getting engaged, much less marriage basically because of Hurricane Katrina/Mayor Naggin. And I'm kinda old fashioned so we are waiting until things settle there for him. It will be nice to live in the country again. Hope I'm not too old to climb trees. :D | | | |

| | I agree. This should not affect the reputation of China. I have traveled all over the world, in particular some politically hostile places, and have found that no matter where I go, I find people. We all share the same basic needs, fears, etc. I do NOT think this is China's fault. It would be ridiculous for ANYONE to blame the whole country of China for one citizen's actions. Unfortunately, I have already had to explain to some (not on here) that generalized statements such as, "Well, China has some bad people." To be honest, with the amount of people that have surged to China, on top of China's already flourishing and abundant tourist traffic, I am surprised there aren't more incidents. Mathematically speaking that is. The only reason this made the news is because so many USA citizens went to China at once, it's the Olympics and well, how "well connected" the victims are. Thank you bunnybon. I can't agree more on how sad this whole situation is. | | | |
