We just got home today from a weekend long family reunion. As some of you may know, I have had some breathing problems lately (going to a specialist tomorros) and one of my uncles (on the other side of the family) passed away last week. Needless to say, it's been kinda rough lately. Although we had a great time at the reunion, there was not good news waiting for us when we got home. My nephew's son is about 6 weeks old and has had a pretty bad fever since late Saturday. He's now in the hospital and they're of course running all kinds of tests. They can't figure out why his fever is so high and one thing that is really concerning them is the posibility of meningitis (sp). My nephew thinks it's all very unneccisary and wants to bring their sone back home. I hope they figure something out soon because I'm really getting tired of all the bad news going on in our family lately....

I'm so sorry to hear about all your bad news reinydawn. My father-in-law, who was just 67, passed away this past Saturday so I too have my share of bad news. Does your nephew's son have any other symptoms besides high fever? When I was a baby I had spinal meningitis. My mom told me that besides a high fever I couldn't move my neck, I couldn't cry, and at one point I was as white as her china plates. Here is a link that shows other symptoms as well: http://spinalmeningitis.org/' I'm not trying to scare you, but if you scroll down about halfway you will read "Meningitis is an important cause of fever in newborn children. For this reason, a lumbar puncture is often done on newborns who have a fever of uncertain origin." I sure hope this is not the case, but I thought I'd mention it because if it is bacterial meningitis it needs to be treated right away as it is life threatening.

I'm sorry, I accidentally added a little thing at the end of the link. Here it is again without it: http://spinalmeningitis.org/

I also wanted to mention my youngest son had a bladder infection when he was just 7 weeks old. He too had a fever (I believe it was almost 105 degrees) and was lethargic. I thought I would mention it in case the doctors didn't check this yet.

I hope by new ollie is better and they found out what was wrong with him. I hope the dad let him stay in the hospital as long as he needed to be. Now a days they do not let anyone stay in the hospital needlessly.

I haven't talked to anyone since I've been back, but I'll see them all this weekend. I'm sure my son would have told me if something was worse. Ollie was supposed to come home the day I left. All the tests were fine, they were just waiting on the meningitis one I think. His fever was about gone and he was acting much better then. I'm sure he's ok!

I am glad to her that the baby is doing batter. Meningitis is bad crap. I have seen to many babies with it and nearly die from it.

Yes, that is hard. I hope that the tests are conclusive, or that they can bring the fever down. Sometimes it is so high for so long it causes what is known as febrile seizures, and then you end up with even more tests. Some times to test for meningitis they have to do a spinal tap. Hope they get some answers before that happens.

I know my nephew and his wife are going totally bonkers - and I can surely understand. We're hoping for a quick diagnosis/recovery!

I do hope they can figure out what is wrong with you tomorrow. As for your nephew's son I wish for the same thing. When my grandson was a baby he also come down with a fever and if a baby of that age comes down with one that does mean there is a problem somewhere. I hope your nephew does not remove the child from the hospital until something is found and he is well. My grandson had mennigitis and was in there for a week and finally got well enough to come home.

We've just had such a rocky couple of weeks lately, this is like the icing on the cake. My nephew will not take him out of the hospital if the docs say not to, but he's very frustrated. And I really don't blame him. It's so hard with a baby because they can't tell you what's wrong. I hope it's all sorted out before I leave town on Thursday.

I hope that your nephew's son is ok and that they find out what's wrong with his soon. I definitely hope that it isn't meningitis. I'm sure that your nephew is having a really tough time seeing his little 6 week old baby back in the hospital so soon after birth. Hopefully, they will be able to find what's wrong quickly and treat the baby so he will be ok to go home soon. I will say a prayer for him. God Bless you and your family, especially the little one.

Thank you very much. This has just been a rough couple weeks for us. I haven't heard anything yet today so I'm hoping that means "no news is good news".
