Why Do People Rely On Answering Machines Even If They Are Around?

Please do not misinterpret me for posting the question but out my curiousity, why do think most of the time people rely on answering machines even if they're around to pick up the phone? Maybe I'm a bit ignorant about this long-time technology (because I don't have it)but as I oftentimes hear and see it from movies, people would pretend not to be there by turning on automatically an answering machine everytime the phone rings.
Would this have a negative effects on long distance communication process which ought be more personalized than automated? Just wondering....

yes..it probably happens but it might not always be true since it is a communication device which connects people..and make the geographic distances to come to a few seconds of ring to the other person. So i think it should be properly used to make them meaning ful.

Our answering machine is always on. Before caller I.D. we used it to screen calls. It saves the hassle from annoying telemarketers. And sometimes there's just some people who you really don't wish to speak to at that moment.
