And The Whole Town Came.........  email this discussion to a friend?

Today has been a bittersweet day. Today our little of town of less than a hundred souls buried one of their own.
I was up early to get to the town hall to help the Ladies Committee set up for the funeral. We only have one Church here and it's Catholic and they won't do funerals for non-members. Like God cares!
Anyway, as a result, when a long time resident dies, we hold the funeral in the town hall, set up an alter at the front and chairs, and arrange food for a wake afterwards in the basement rooms. The Catholic Church does let us have the loan for the day of some proper pews for the immediate family.
I was on my way out the door of my house to do my bit, when I caught the Olympic race that had Jamaica winning the gold and had to stop and drop a post about it, I was so proud of them!
Then off to the hall I went, and blow me down what a zoo!
Everyone who lives within a 20km radius was there and running back and forth, up and down and getting the place ready for the service.
If you want something done in record time with style and class, get a group of women together! They are wonders and poetry in motion.
Before long things settled and the family and mourners started taking their seats. The service was ecumenical and very moving. I learned so much about the deceased from all the little stories told and memories shared. I also learned a lot about my town and the respect and reverance they hold for the founding families. I was actually intimidated that the position I hold in my town had previously been held by people of far more substance and character than I. It was a humbling experience to hear the history of my town and the parts played by the ancestors of,( and) the deceased.
Amazing what you learn in the most unlikely places!
After the service and before the 'wake' the entire congregation formed a line behind a black draped horse drawn wagon, that led the procession to the town cemetary for the interment. The weather was hot with cool breezes and sunny, so the association with an old fashioned movie scene was more difficult to make but spot on all the same. Bagpipes played Rock of Ages and Amazing Grace the whole way and everyone sang. It was one of the most incredible things I have ever been a part of. I put in a brief appearance at the 'wake' to pay my respects to the family, but had to come home and take the weight off my back. It got quite a workout going up and down those stairs at the hall fetching and carrying and organizing and directing and doing my duty.
On Monday morning we have to do the same thing all over again for another resident who passed this week. His funeral will be in the early morning though. But I still have to bake another large batch of raspberry tarts for it! lol

When was the last time you took part in a town function that moved you to tears?

hi spark....that is great what they did. and it is interesting hearing about the lives of those who have died. to answer your question the last time i went to a funeral that was a non-relative or friend. one that involved many people because it was a tragedy. a house fire took the lives of a baby and child. it was a very sad ceremony. and the worst part was the grieving mother. the fire started because the mother was up early warming the baby bottle. she didn't use a microwave because she wanted to be as healthy as possible, so she warmed the bottle on the stove. being sleep deprived with a baby that wakes her up often, she fell asleep while the bottle was warming. she woke up to a fire that blocked her from the rest of the house. she went outside frantically to try to get in and reach her children, but alas could not. a neighbor called 911. she lost her two children. and the funeral brought tears for most people.

Ah glitter a tragedy indeed. My sister-in-law and her two young children were killed by a train some years ago, and their combined funeral was heartbreaking too. It was seeing those tiny coffins beside their mother's that brought everyone to tears. The one today was for a lady that had died of cancer, and the one on Monday is for a gentleman that also died of cancer. Most of our town residents are over the age of 75 and so it's to be expected. Thank you for sharing your story. Hugs.

yes spark...those tiny coffins are an additional shock and heartache. hugs.

I've been to a few large memorial/funerals but nothing as grand as the one you've described. You just keep baking, that should keep you out of trouble for a little while lol

That is nice that the whole town pitches in and helps remember and bury the dead, Sparks. But with one church, looks like they would lend it to have a funeral. Here, the people either have it in the funeral home chapel, or at a church. But, then, there are churches 'on every corner'...not really out here in the country. But you have your choice any where. Lots of people opt to have their viewing and funeral all in the funeral home now days. It does sound nice, though, with the bag pipes playing those two great hymns.

Our town residents are mostly seniors and we don't have a funeral home. Viewings are held the city at the funeral parlor of choice there, but the funerals are always held in the town where most of these people were born and died. It's an old rural tradition here.

Hi spark,

That's good..I know your presence means so much to them!
I have to "laugh" with the rules of that Catholic Church! I am Roman Catholic but....anyway! So much about it, that's what they believed!

Last time I attended thing like that was the man who sponsor a scholarship to the university where I graduated..He helped a lot of students financially and almost all of those students are very successful now in their respective career!
His family from USA didn't show up, and we don't know why! We tried to call his son but it was the time when this man can't talk anymore!
Anyway, it was very touching and we feel really the love and care of the people who attended and were not really relatives!

I was raised Catholic too, and sometimes I'm rather ashamed of that, but they did lend us the pews so there's hope for them yet! LOL And itsn't it lovely to see so many people not directly connected to the deceased at a funeral just out of respect for their reputation? I know it made me proud of my town today.

Och tis the bagpipes that does it! They always give me the shivers and bring tears to my eyes when they play a 'hymn' on the pipes. There's nothing like it.

Let's see....it wasn't my town but I once attended a biker's Toy Run for handicapped children. The route was down the main street. Encased in our leathers, as it was quite cold, we all rode with various toys strapped to our bikes. We passed a US Marine recruiting station. This still gets me teary-eyed. 2 young Marines stepped out of the station, and snapped to attention. They stood that way through the entire parade of bikers. Stiff and proud and honoring their fellow soldiers. You may be aware that there are A LOT of vets in biker groups. It was one of the most reverent respectful things I have ever witnessed and I will never forget it....never! Yip, I cried.

Yes, the when the bagpipes they are a callin', there's no denying them.
I belong to Patriot Riders and they often have runs for charity and to support our troops and such. They always get salutes from people as they pass through. And yip, makes me cry every time too.

myLot reputation of 93/100. Irishfrndly65 (8534)  4 years ago

I didn't realize they were up there. My oldest brother and his wife are Patriot Guard Riders.

Yep there are several chapters here though they are based in the U.S. I don't ride anymore, but I've seen them several times at a number of their rally's and places they've shown up to pay their respects. I haven't seen them since I moved last year, but I still get their alerts. I'm waiting for them to come to the province I now live in.

It has been years Spark. I applaud you and your efforts and I think you undermine yourself when it comes to what you do and your qualities.
It sounds like you had a wonderful day that would delight anyone that attended and all of us that didn't. Even though the reason was one that most of us dread having to deal with. We all do our part on these occasions. Some do more, and I'm sure you are one that does more, lol.
Rest those tired feet, no dancing tonight. Or less dancing under our moonlight. Have a nice relaxing drink and be ready for tomorrow.

myLot reputation of 84/100. sparkofinsanity (3868)   ranked 3 out of 61 in sparks tales  4 years ago

You know moonbeam, you make a good point. Today was probably one of the happiest funerals I've ever attended. People here are so connected to the seasons that to them death is part of the life cycle and not just a reason to weep and nash their teeth. It's a celebration of life really and you have to give them credit for finding the joy amid the sorrow.

It is hard most of the time but that's the way it should be. Death is a part of life and should be accepted. Although it is hard when it's trully a loved one or a child.

Hi sparky,

Our town is small but not too small and we don't have anything like that here, if antone dies its normal church srevice with just family and close friends thats all, nobody really knows anybody so everyone goes about their own way and not bother.

Love Hugs.

Tamara

I moved out of a town like that and so the way they do things here, was a bit of a shock, but you know, I think I prefer it this way. Hugs sweets.

What a lovely tradition and what a terrible shame that it's gone the way of most of our old and charming traditions these days. With the passing on of those who kept these traditions alive, I really think that our societies suffer terrible losses of all kinds.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss and its great the whole town gets together for it. That says alot about your town. My brother died over in Iraq and he lived in a small town to, about 100 people and they all came to the funeral and supported our family. The military put it all together and it was nice. We had a big dinner after words to. I havent been able to go to another funeral.

myLot reputation of 84/100. sparkofinsanity (3868)   ranked 3 out of 61 in sparks tales  4 years ago

My condolences on your loss Owl, and I understand your not being able to attend another funeral. I am glad to hear though that the military stepped up to the plate for your family and that town was so supportive.

I have never been involved in anything like that. The way you describe it seems very touching and wonderful that a town would get together and do this, like one big family. Wow is all I can say!

myLot reputation of 84/100. sparkofinsanity (3868)   ranked 3 out of 61 in sparks tales  4 years ago

With less than l00 residents living in the town proper, they are like one big family. To see so many of the farmers and their families that have farms surrounging the town show up was truly inspiring. Wow! is what I said too!
