Are LCD monitors eats too much power?  |

 I'm investigating LCDs since I want to replace my CRT for LCD due to my vision problems. Does it consume too much power compared to CRTs? Also, do LCDs stays much longer than CRT?

| 5. rexjallo (734) | 1 year ago |  The fact is LCD monitors consumes less power than Crt monitors thats why LCD will replace crt monitors soon. I will also change my CRT monitor to Lcd sooner. Did you know that there are two types of Lcd sold in the market?. One TN (twisted nematic); this type of LCD has a narrow viewing angle and the other one is STN (super twisted nematic) this one has a wide viewing angle.

Well, I'll just list some pros and cons(compared to CRTs) of LCD, which will cover up your doubts too:
Pros:
Power- LCD requires about 1/3rd of the power a CRT requires for the same screen area. This lowers its heat generation too.
Runtime- An LCD will run well for about 40,000 hours, after which its backlight starts fading. A CRT will rune for about 20,000 hours after which it's brightness starts reducing.
Flicker- There is no flicker(refresh rate) in an LCD, so it's better for the eyes.
Geometry- An LCD can display perfect geometry, i.e perfectly straight edges. Whereas, a CRT normally has rounded edges.
Physical Size- An LCD is a fraction of the size of a CRT, thus looks good and saves space.
Cons:
Resolution- One of the major drawbacks of an LCD is that it has a fixed native resolution. If you change it's resolution from the native resolution, picture quality will suffer.
Viewing Angles- LCDs have narrow viewing angles(Especially from top to bottom). But the newer LCDs have quite wide viewing angles so this problem is being rectified.
So, that sums it up. LCDs are a bit expensive, but in the long run, they prove cheaper and eco-friendly.

Well, using a different resolution deterioirates the quality but it's not THAT bad. I used to play a game(Sid Meier's Pirates) on 1024x768 whereas my LCD's resolution is 1280x800. The colours and geometry seems a bit washed out but it's ok once you get used to it. Also, there's an option in Nvidia graphics cards to shrink the screen for lower resolutions and display it in optimum quality(with reduced screen size).
