Use a tampon.
Warning guys, this is a girl thing, but you may join the discussion and share you own personal first time experience.
Anyways, I grew up in Philippines and I guess its one of the country's in the whole world that dies not carry tampons. So I grew up using sanitary napkins and grew up being ignorant about tampons.
My sister has been endorsing the use of tampons because she thinks its one of the best things ever invented by man/woman. The reason is, you don't get rashes, it helps avoid darkening of your inner thigh, plus its cleaner, you can flush it down the toilet, just don't flush it with toilet tissue or else you'll need to call a plumber. So those are the ups of using a tampon.
The downside is, I've never used it. Last time a friend gave me a tampon when I told her I just got my period, I just stared at her and said, "WHat the hell am I going to do with this..." When she showed me how, I was just so shocked I threw it in the trash can.
This morning, I had no choice, no sanitary pads were available and my sister insisted I try it, and it wasn't the best experience in my life. But now I know why she likes it so much, it is cleaner plus you don't get that feeling that something is cutting and creating friction on your inner thigh. But I guess its not for me. I still feel much comfortable with the sanitary pads. But that's just me...

But sanitary napkins are also a causative factor for yeast infection, rashes, etc. I guess it still depends on your personal hygiene.

you actually don't feel a thing, I guess the key is to relax when putting it in and taking it out. But, it feels awkward at first because you know its inside, so i guess it depends on how you can physically adapt to a foreign body. Like contacts, it took me some time to get used to the feeling of having something on my eyes, but now, there are times I don;t know if I have them on or I took them out already.
