When you rent a car, do you complain if something's wrong to get a discount?

While on vacation the last 2 weeks, we rented a car 3 different times. Each time was one-way so we never dropped the car off at the same place we picked it up. The first car we got was a little economy car - a Kia or something. It wasn't too bad for the most part - we were only in it for about 4 hours. One thing that we noticed when we drove into the sun though, was that they windshield was filthy on the indside. We tried to clean it off with the napkins we had in the car but it didn't help a whole lot. It was really hard to see out of and we let them know that when we dropped it off. They said that they always get complaints from cars out of California. They did give us half off for the inconvenience so that was cool! The second car we rented was from Las Vegas to Salt Lake and it was pretty good, we upgraded to the next level because it was a bit longer drive - 6 hours. I don't remember what that was, but it was some kind of crossover. It didn't seem to have as much leg room in the front but it drove pretty good. The last car we got was to go from Salt Lake back to Las Vegas and that thing STUNK! I thought it smelled like a dead animal, but my husband didn't smell anything. That one was a Honda Pilot and it seemed like every time the A/C kicked on (which was always) the car would do a little bump. We told them about that - mostly so they could check it out - and they gave us a $20 credit. Do you tell the rental place you had a problem with the car, or make something up, to get a discount?
