This was pretty cool on our trip. When we planned to drive from Las Vegas to Salt Lake, someone asked if we were going to go see the Salt Flats. Well, I had heard of them, but wasn't really sure what it was all about. So we looked it up on the map, and if we wanted to go that way it was on the way. The trip wasn't any longer really, so we decided to go for it. Our GPS took us right there - kinda... It took us halfway down this road in the middle of nowhere. There was no welcome center, info center, park ranger (it is a state park or something). We saw all these cars and stuff still driving toward us so even though the GPS said we'd arrived, we kept driving to see where everyone else was coming from, thinking the gift shop was down a ways. So we get to this ticket guy and figure we don't want to have to pay to get into something that we aren't sure what it is. So we ask him how much it is and he tells us it's normally $15/person, but since it's so late in the day and it's over at 5pm - in an hour - he'll let us in for free. So we ask what's going on. We had no clue it was "Speed Week" when they set the land speed records! I had seen it on TV before but didn't realize that was the Salt Flats. We drove around for a while and watched some REALLY fast cars go by. It was pretty cool and I'm glad we went by - even though we never did find that gift shop...
