Voodoo- Louisiana- Retribution? |
|
I heard a remark yesterday questioning whether Gustav following on the devastation of Kristina on New Orleans/Louisiana is God's retribution for the the widespread practice of Voodoo/Black Magic in that area. That never even crossed my mind but it did give me food for thought. What do you think? Possible or just superstition?

That is just a story some people are trying to use to scare other people into their religion. Making them think it is the wrath of God causing the storms. My family lives in New Orleans and my aunt is one of the most God fearing people I know, the love God and Jesus more than life itself and has always lived her life as such, same as much of my family in New Orleans (and I have a large one). Voodoo is a fraction of what New Orleans is about and anyone who wants to use it as an excuse for these storms needs a hobby and a vacation.
Sorry but you hit a sore spot so this might sound more like a rant but I really needed to get it out. My Grandmother died after the Katrina/Rita evacuation and she was nothing short of holy, God didn't punish her with those storms.

GardenGerty (20526) | 1 year ago | It rains on the just and the unjust. Same for hurricanes. I do believe it is rather primitive thinking to try to blame weather phenomena on religious missteps. If that were the case, then we could control the weather and its outcomes by just "being good". Not about to happen. Your example is correct, and if the hurricanes were spiritual retribution, then surely for the sake of the holy people who also live in New Orleans, God would have spared the city. I believe what you say about your family, your aunt, and Grandmother. I know there are others in New Orleans who are the same. I think this is just making excuses for not choosing to maintain the infrastructure over the years, and to not evacuate the threatened areas when told to.

2. dloveli (1011) | 1 year ago | I don't honestly know who would have started a rumor like that. Unfortunately I tend to believe its some kind of biased religious or a hate group. Most people no matter what religion they are believe in a loving God. Not a God that puts his vengeance upon his children. I believe this with every inch of my soul. God teaches by example. If in fact there is something to black magic. WHich I think there is. It isnt God that is doing it. I am sure of that. Black magic involves satan or Idolistic worships. If anything, thats what is doing it. Not GOD. dl

whiteheather39 (13448) | 1 year ago | I agree that it probably started with one of these biased religious groups.

whiteheather39 (13448) | 1 year ago | Thank you both for your input and as I am neither a student or practitioner of either Voodoo or Black magic I do not know or really care what the difference is between them. Although getting a voodoo doll of someone you do not like and sticking pins in them to cause the unsuspecting person harm does have the indication of some kind of nasty magic.

whiteheather39 (13448) | 1 year ago | I agree why should the innocents suffer if this was the case.

6. LisaHW (1511) | 1 year ago | I seriously doubt that. Weather is weather. It happens. If you live near water you're at risk of getting flooding. In Katrina, many people didn't leave because they wanted to stay with their homes and pets. Many had no way to get out. There was a whole set of things that have since been addressed; and, fortunately, Gustav did not do what Katrina did.
There are high-risk areas and lower risk areas when it comes to storms, and people in Louisiana live in a high-risk area. If they moved to, say, Massachusetts they wouldn't have quite as many hurricanes to worry about.

9. pyewacket (11662) | 1 year ago | Yikes, I can't help thinking how totally ridiculous that sounds and no that is just superstitious mumbo jumbo. If people are linking voodoo/black magic and the reason for Katrina, then Gustav, then maybe those same people should link all the fires in California, the floods in the mid-west, etc., etc to voodu/black magic, pagan/wiccan practices..Or how about catastrophic earthquakes like they had in China???....As far as I know there haven't been any dire natural catastrophes in Massachusetts, where there is a large pagan/wiccan population once more.....ironically in Salem where the biggest witch hunts were done in the late 1600/1700s

| 10. lowery1101 (70) | 1 year ago | I heard this more than one time when I was working on the coast after Katrina. I do believe that God punishes us for doing wrong, but he isnt going to punish you for what I did wrong or vice versa. Besides, too many people blame God for things that happen bad when it is only a product of THEIR bad choices.
I do not believe that God is responsible for what happened to NOLA. NOLA is responsible for that. They knew for ages that the levies wouldnt hold if they had a bad storm, and they chose to spend their money elsewhere. (Well, at least the politians did)
