New Workplace? Some tips to help you out! email this discussion to a friend?

I've been there.I was once new to a company and how scared I was that time. Then, time went by and I realized that there is nothing really to be scared of. So here are some tips on what to do if you are in a new (I did not know these then, but I think I did some)work environment. You could use this for any new environment that you would be in actually. These are general things that I have read from different sources and I am just putting them together.

BE NICE
Sounds obvious but it's the easiest way to build foundation with your co-workers. Some of you might want to bring in some cookies or extra snack to share with your co-workers. It may be seen as a bribe but someone would eventually say thank you.

DONT BE PUSHY OR PRESUMPTOUS
Well, don't assume that everyone would be your friend or that everyone would like you. Let's face it, not all are made to be together. There are just some colleages who are not for you to be friend with. So accept that fact and act professionally to all so that they would know, you may be friendly to all but you mean business.

TRY NOT TO ASSUME THE WORST
Ok, so we are not assuming that everyone would be our friend. But let us not assume that everyone would be against us as well. Also, the first few days would really be tough as all of you are still getting used to the idea that you are going to work together from that day on. So give yourself a break about having friends on the first day of work.

FOCUS ON THE WORK
Remember that you are there to work and NOT make friends. If you are able to find friends along the way, then that is an added bonus. It is true that it is easier to work if you have friends to work with. But then, dont be too focused on the friendship that you forget your work. That would definitely make you fired.

Any other tips you could add?

These are very good points. And right on the nose. One of the things I have found in the workplaces that I have been in is friendships don't work in a work place. People take things to personal. One other thing I would add is not to gossip. There is a lot of that that goes on in the work place and it is very inappropriate. The best policy is not to gossip at all. That way you don't hurt feelings and pass on information that is not true.
