I've Got Chiggers!! UGH!! |
| |
| They're all over both of my legs, more so on my right and they're driving me insane!! Gosh they itch!! I've been putting clear finger nail polish on all the bites and that's when they really squirm!! They're squirming because I'm smothering them to death with the finger nail polish. The polish feels like hard plastic on my skin and even that is driving me insane!! I've learned my lesson!! I won't go into the back yard woods ever again without "OFF!" on me!! Oh no way!! Once is enough for me!! Yeah, hubby got them too but not nearly as bad as I did. I must have an attractive smell to them or I stepped right on their nest. I wonder why they didn't bother me earlier this year? Is it this is the only time they're active? Does anybody know anything about these little boogers? Other than them being like ticks but much smaller and they bury themselves under your skin and itch like crazy all the while making bite welts on my skin, is there anything else I should know about them or even would want to know? lol | | Chiggers | | | | |

| | I've never had that problem, but I feel for you. I wouldn't WANT to have that problem. It sounds itchy, annoying, and possibly painful. As for the finger nail polish, I hope that helps. As awful as it feels, just think of how annoying it is to THEM, and that may make you feel a little better...I know it would make me feel better. :) | | | | | | |

| | Here's the web site to this article, check it out and I'll attach a picture for you as well. Click on the picture and it should get bigger for you to see better. I left a picture above as well to give you a look at what it looks like on the skin. http://by121w.bay121.mail... Introduction A chigger is a very tiny mite. They cause intense itching. Chiggers actually feed on skin cells. Severe itching usually occurs in less than 6 hours, followed by a small, raised bump approximately 2-3 mm. in diameter. However, an allergic reaction may ensue, and there may be a small wheal, which sometimes is worsened with itching. Chigger bites are commonly seen where the skin is in contact with grass or weeds. It is commonly seen underneath socks or along belt lines. Treatment Topical Cortisone creams can be very helpful to reduce the itching. Adult chiggers do not lay eggs underneath the skin, and Lindane (Kwell), which is also used for head lice, can be very effective, as well as asking your healthcare provider for Permethrin (Elimite). These medications usually take care of the chiggers fairly quickly. | | | |

| | Ewwww, you got the cooties. I am not even laughing, you sound miserable, I have nevergotten anything like that. Do you have some hydrocortozone cream, that will help with the itch. Other then that I have no idea what to do. I woul never had thought about the nail polish. Have you talked to a doc or a pharmacist, they might have something at thedrug store over the counter to help. Good luck, you poor thing, if it wasn't for bad luck you would have no luck at all. I do feel sorry for you. I hope you get rid of the cooties soon. I am teasing about the cooties, hehe | | | | | | |

| | Adult chiggers usually overwinter in protected places and become active in the spring, although in Florida they may be active all year. The females lay eggs in a sheltered area. The eggs hatch into an ectoparasitic, six-legged larval form which is less than 1/50 inch long. The larva is the parasitic stage that feeds on humans and animals. The orange-yellow or light-red larval stage crawls on the soil surface until a suitable host is found. Suitable hosts range from small mammals to birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Humans are accidental hosts. Chiggers that attach to humans are usually dislodged or die within hours. The larvae suck fluids from the skin of the host animal and do not burrow under the skin. Usually within three days the larva is engorged. The larva then drops from the host to the ground and transforms into the nymphal stage. The nymph, like the adult mite, has eight legs. The bodies are usually hairy and about 1/20 inch long and bright red. The nymphs and adults feed on insect eggs, small insects, or other organisms. The entire life cycle can require from two months to one year. As many as 1-5 generations may be produced per year depending on the temperature, moisture, and location. Chiggers are easily removed from the skin by taking a hot bath or shower and lathering with soap several times. The bath will kill attached chiggers and others which are not attached. Since symptoms of contact may not appear for several hours, it is not always possible to completely prevent welts caused by chigger bites. Antiseptic should be applied to all welts which do appear. Temporary relief of itching may be achieved with nonprescription local anesthetics available at most drug stores. Studies have shown that meat tenderizer, rubbed into the welt, will alleviate itching. Got this from the University of Florida. Here is the link! http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/IG085 | | | | | | |

| | I just found this on the internet.. Try this I hope it helps. Facts About Chiggers Chiggers, which are also called harvest mites or red bugs, are very small and can enzymes that cause the itchy rash. . Treatments for Chigger Bites While nail polish isn't a good treatment for chigger bites, anything that can help control the itching can be helpful, including: take a bath or shower as soon as possible after any possible exposure to chiggers apply your favorite OTC anti-itch medication, such as hydrocortisone, Calamine lotion, Sarna, oatmeal baths, etc. oral Benadryl a prescription strength steroid cream Although chiggers in North America don't usually carry any diseases, the bites themselves can get infected | | | | | | |

| | Thanks for that information, it was really helpful! I thought we had to smother them to kill them in order to get rid of them... at least that's what I've been told anyway, maybe not. I wonder what exactly kills them then? I mean, we treat the itching then what? Do they just die in our skin? | | | |

| | Contrary to popular belief, chiggers do not burrow into the skin, but pierce the skin, (often around a hair follicle) and inject a fluid that prevents blood from clotting. The fluid causes tissues to be inflamed; each bite has a characteristic red welt with a white, hard central area. The tiny red chigger in the center of the itching bump is effectively camouflaged by the inflamed tissues. Fluids secreted by the mite iquifies the tissues that are ingested by the chigger. It is these injected fluids that results in the severe itching and dermatitis that accompanies chigger bites. According to this they are not in the skin they are on the skin so bathing them will wash the off your body. | | | |

| | I completely undertsand where you are coming from--the country. LOL I don't use nail polish when I get them. When i notice a red bump, which as you know being near woods, it could be anything right? well I use the hydrocortisone cream (Benadryl) on all of them. It stops the itching and the bups go away. My father actually calls them seed ticks...but I am not sure if they are completely related or not. They are annoying. And we get them throughout the summer, but the Fall is the worst. Good luck to ya. Oh and OFF works even after you have them on you. It will kill them or make them go away. | | | | | | |

| | Warm soapy water is all that is necessary to remove and kill chiggers. There is no need, and it is rather dangerous, to apply household products such as kerosene, turpentine, ammonia, alcohol, gasoline, salt or dry cleaning fluid. Don't do it. Attached chiggers are removed by even the lightest rubbing. If you are away from civilization, you can remove attached chiggers before they do much damage by frequently rubbing down with a towel or a cloth. What can you do to alleviate suffering if these precautions fail? Lotions will relive the itching somewhat, but no substance is completely effective. The only ultimate cure is time, since there is nothing you can do to dislodge the chigger's feeding tube, the true cause of your itch. You must simply wait until your body breaks down and absorbs the foreign object. In the meantime, local anesthetics such as benzocaine, camphor-phenol and ammonium hydroxide may provide you with several hours of comfort at a stretch. Over-the-counter creams can also help. In rare cases, some people are allergic to chigger bites and require prescription medications from their doctor. | | | | | | |

| | Hi bellaofchaos! I've got to be frank.... I'd never ever put kerosene, turpentine, ammonia, alcohol, gasoline, or salt on such bites!! I'd have to be quite insane to even consider doing that!! lol I'm finding out that soap and water is all I needed but I didn't know I even had the little freaks until the next day!! Ugh! | | | |
