Red Diesel - do you know where to get it?  |

 Hey Everyone.
We have a ride on mower which uses red diesel or so I believe. Our problem is that we don't know where to get it and the mover needs refueling. Can anyone point me in the right direction so that we can find out where to purchase the stuff. Apparently farmers use it - problem is I don't know any farmers to ask.

| 3. ellie333 (6792) | 1 year ago |  Hi Voiletdreams, Before I finished reading the discussion my answer was going to be go see a local farmer as they always use red diesel for their tractors and our local one makes Scrumpy that could be classed as red diesel in looks and taste LOL, but you say you don't know any farmers to ask so I cannot help further sorry. 1. buy ordinary diesel (DERV) from a petrol station, which is expensive
2. buy a tank and have red diesel delivered
3. buy some red diesel in a 5 gallon container from your local boat yard, canal marina of farmer.
4. buy bio-diesel on-line and have it delivered in drums
5. make your own bio-diesel from used vegetable oil
6. run it on straight vegetable oil. (subject to it having the right type of injection pump.

Will it run on normal diesel? We were a bit concerned that if we changed from the red diesel it would cause problems (kind of like when you use petrol instead of diesel)?
I will check out the marina on the river down the drag - perhaps we will be able to get some there - hopefully, cause we really don't want a tank full of the stuff.
Used vegetable oil - I know diesel cars can be run on vegetable oil, but you say used veg oil? Not sure about the injection pump so perhaps best to steer clear of that one, anyway, diesel from the gas station and veg oil from the supermarket are about the same price these days so not much difference there I'm afraid.

| urbandekay (4295) | 1 year ago | Well, diesel engines were originally designed to run on vegetable oil.
Red diesel is just diesel with a red dye in it, for identification. Rest assured your engine will run fine on it (Even though it has less sulphur so is marginally harsher on your injection pump.)
You don't say what engine it is but it would probably run fine on straight vegetable oil, though it might be sluggish to start in the cold.
It would run best on bio-diesel, which being more lubrication is kinder on the injection pump.
