How is flattery different from appreciation? How do you respond to flattery?

Some persons are in the habit of flattering and exaggerating the virtues and personality of their elders, friends, bosses and employers to draw favourable impression and receive weightage in their favour. They use a mix of flowery words, sweet voices and appealing gestures packaged in such a way,it becomes difficult for some one to assess their insincere and selfish motives, hidden inside it.Is it feasible to distinguish sincere and hearty appreciation from insincere praise or flattery? How is flattery different from appreciation? How do you respond/react to statements of flattery?

I would much rather be appreciated than flattered. I think real gratitude is more difficult to fake than false admiration. If someone appreciates what I have done they will be truly grateful. I don't need them to praise me or flatter me, as long as I know they really appreciate me.

Dear sister, many thanks for giving a befitting response.I do sincerely appreciate your approach to deal with persons making false and exaggerated admiration.Do you always expect gratitude from the persons who appreciates you for what you have done for them? Have a nice day!!

You can only distinguish between flattery and appreciation if you know yourself and your limits very well. I would respond with "thank you" for both flattery and appreciation but will only believe appreciation and let flattery slip out the other ear and still stick to my original judgment. That is only if I know myself very well.

Many thanks for nicely responding and sharing your viewpoints.I sincerely appreciate your attitude and way of differentiating flattery from sincere appreciation. One has to be fully aware of one's strengths and weaknesses and should ignore all kinds of flattery, based on his/her own judgement. Have a nice day!!

i just say thank you & wonder if they are really sincere alot of the time. flattery is nice if they really meant it but sometimes i have my doubts about that.i just take it w/a grain of salt & go on.
