Hey everyone! I'm training for Disney's 13K race at the end of October, which is about 8.1 miles. You have to keep a 16 minute pace so I always time myself on my runs. Right now I'm doing about 5 miles an hour, so a 12 minute pace which is really good in my opinion.

This is going to be my first big race though so does anyone have any training tips? How not to get tired of training and running everyday, or what is the best thing to eat before you run and then afterwards? Do you drink water during your run or just when you get back?

I'm new to the whole long distance running idea, so hopefully this discussion proves useful!

Congrats on a fabulous commitment! I just finished the Race for the taste 10k yesterday; it was very rewarding! I also plan on doing the 13k at the end of the month. Your mile time is perfect for your first race, remember your goal is to finish, not finish first, just finish. As for training tips: First, do not run every day. I used marathonrookie.com to find fabulous training tips. There are plenty of other sites which are great for advice too. Cross training on your down days are a wonderful way of changing things up. Also, take a spinning or kick boxing class could be a great way to broaden your surroundings. Otherwise, you could get bored and quit. Not the outcome in which you are looking for.
Carbo loading, LOTS OF FLUID and lots of rest the day before the race increase your glycogen stores so that you have more energy to expend during the race. The 13k is at 10 at night which is different than most races. It is going to mean looking at eating light during the day, carbs about 2 hours b4 the race and TONS of fluids that day. Also, during the race, fluids about every 20-30 minutes(every 2 miles or so) There are water stops along the way unless you prefer to carry your own. Unless you train this way, I don't recommend it. My running partner carries a bottle when she runs but my husband and I wouldn't dare to, we aren't comfortable with it. Hopefully this has helped a little. Good luck on the run...see you there!
