Spiritual progress requires us to highlight what is essential and to disregart everthing else as trival pursuits unworthy of our attention. Moreover, it is actually a good thing to be thought foolish and simple with regard to matters that don't concern us. Don't be concerned with other people's imressions of you. They are dazzled and deluded by appearances. Stick with your purpose. This alone will strenghten your will and give your life coherence.
Refrain from trying to win other people's approval and admiration. you are takeing a higher road. Don ling for others to see you as sophisticated, unique, or wise. Infact, be suspicious if you appear to others as someone special. Be on your guard against a false sense of self-importance.
Keeping your will in hormony with truth and concerning yourself with what is beyond your control are mutually exclusive. While you are absorbed in one, you will neglect the other.

Spiritual progress or to achieve the goal of spirituality may appear useless or complicated to many people nowadays. Infact spirituality is the most simple and natural path which can be taken by anyone. We are eternally connected to the 'Supreme Being' and each one shares an unique relationship with HIM. But due to the illusionary energy we all have forgotten our original position and goal. We all are running after some thing which is temporary and useless. But in order to realise this one has to remove the cloud of illusion from ones mind. This can be only done by surrendering oneself in the feet of the Lord and following some basic principles.
We always expect love, respect, success etc. But these are just temporary things. But we waste our entire life in running after these things. Instead we all should follow the principle 'Simple living and high thinking'. We try to do what others do. But instead we should stop and think, whether this is our goal? The first thing to get rid of is ego. Ego is the root cause of many sufferings. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had said that one should consider oneself lower than even the straw of grass lying on the street and then surrender in the feet of God. But how many people are able to do it? Very few. We consider ourselves to be really great and expect great things to happen for us and with us. This is the first sign of foolishness. Instead we should accept everything saying that we get what we deserve and what we need and not what we desire. Controlling our mind is very difficult. Even Arjuna said in Bhagvad Gita that this is not possible for him. So engaging our mind in spirituality is the best thing, rather than trying to control it. Once its done, all good things will naturally follow. Thanks for comming up with such spiritual and intellectual discussions.

there is a word in sanskrit called 'viveka', means 'determination' (i think you know much better in this regard, as you come from the country where sanskrit originated
). it is from the word a great yogi's (named vivekananda) name originate.
being a spiritual aspirant, someone need to posses the determination. he have to be able to determine which is real, and which is fake. which is useful and which is useless. which is needed to speed his spiritual progress up, which becomes an obstacle for that.
so, yes, every time we will do do everything, every time we will choose everything, we have always ask to ourselves, does this will encourage our spiritual progress or instead slow it down? always doing that imply that we already have 'viveka' with us. thus, our spiritual progress is a certainty.

What you say is true for earnest aspirants in the spiritual path. However, very few of us have spiritual progress as our lifetime goal. To the vast majority however, spirituality is something that will give them a sense of peace and tranquility amidst the din of material life. No more than that. People who prefer to lead a simple and pious life are very few these days. The illusion of the world is such. Moreover, the one who makes his priorities based on evolving quickly is seen as a fool these days. No wonder, nobody wants to go for it. Everywhere people are concerned only with self-confidence. There is no worth for humility or modesty. As a result, most go proud and arrogant since there is only a thin line between self-confidence and pride.
