I lost my phone to a holdupper last September 16.  | |  Last Tuesday at past 6pm, I lost my cellphone to a holdupper. We were in the same PUJ (Public Utility Jeepney, a public transport here in the Philippines). He was seated close to the PUJ's exit while I was seated halfway to the exit. So we weren't actually sitting next to each other, but we were on the same side of the jeepney. There were only 4 of us passengers, the other 2 are high school students seated opposite our side. There was even a barker ("condoktor", the driver's assistant who collects the fare from passengers and who stays on the PUJ's exit). Not very long the holdupper was already inches beside me pointing a hunting knife at my waist. He told me he just wanted my cellphone. I didn't know what to do. But I didn't like to give him my phone. But he pushed the knife closer to my skin and asked me what I wanted to happen. I told him, "All right, I'm giving it to you now!". But I was still thinking of what else I could do. I searched for my phone very slowly and he was becoming impatient. The 2 students and the barker got to see what was happening. I saw the barker was shocked to see the knife the holdupper held so he just pretended not to care about us. Since the barker was in the exit, calling for more passengers, he was getting in the way of the holdupper. So it took time for the holdupper to ran away. I stared at the holdupper during that whole time (trying to memorize his face)I wanted to push him over the jeepney if I just had the strength. But he might harm the barker as well. The holdupper, upon noticing I've been looking at him, turned to me and said: "So do you really want it huh?! Tell me! What do you want to happen?!" So I just looked away. Until he finally got the chance to ran away. I was traumatized I was shaking. I went to the police and filed a report. Even when I got home and slept, I was shaking the whole night.
When before I just thought of learning martial arts, now I'm determined to learn it. If I ever see that guy again, he'll see what I wanted to happen! And to the bad guys I'll encounter someday, I'm sure they'll be getting what they deserved!

yes taking martial arts may help but be careful because if they are going this they have companion.

Think about this, say u had a green+ belt in karate or something, u try to use some techniques, and the techniques fail, they holdupper takes out a weapon and takes your life, and for wat? a cellphone? only use martial arts when your life is threatened. (purple belt in US army combatives and black belt in kenpo karate).

But I kind of get it now what "self-defense" literally means, it is simply defending oneself. You defend when you're attacked. But isn't a hunting knife pointed at your waist enough threat to your life? | |

| | | 3. oadgmd (99) | 12 months ago |  I too have been in a similar situation. I was on my way home while on a jeep and a man pointed a knife at me and asked for my wallet and phone. I know some karate so i succeeded in disarming him. However, he had an accomplice with him who then attacked me. I was successful in dodging his knife attacks by kicking the assailant off the jeep but i was stabbed on my left leg. initially i was proud that i had done so. In retrospect, however, i realized that what i did endangered everyone around me and,later on, made my mom and my relatives unnecessarily worried. So, if i were to experience the same again, i probably would have just given my stuff. I dont think its worth it to make those care for you worry just because of a few bucks.
