I have visited Washington, D. C. twice. Once in the summer of 1994 and again in the summer of 1995. Both times I visited Washington, D. C. was for the poetry coventions sponsored by the International Society of Poets. I especially enjoyed the National Zoo with many curious and exotic creatures. The panda's were adorable, so much so, that I couldn't help but fall in love with them. I saw many exotic birds that honored their guests with their graceful dancing. There was a squirrel there who got passed over by the visitors because he blended into the scenery so beautifully. I enjoyed the Smithsonian Museums, such as the Space Museum, and the Museum that housed the dressed and other forms of history for America's 1st ladies. I enjoyed the visit to the Holocaust memorial museum. It was all so touching and deeply moving. There was an exhibit there of a home with secret compartments that hid the jews back during WWII. It was as if I could feel the presence of these people and was for a brief moment in time living the experience with the ghosts of the past. I enjoyed the trolley rides and the trip to Arlington Cemetary and visiting the graves of President John F. Kennedy and 1st Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassiss. The eternal flame enabled me to feel John F. Kennedy's presence. The Vietnam Wall was powerful. I could feel the presence of those soldiers that died in battle during the Vietnam War. It was such a powerful, moving experience that I ended up shedding some tears while standing before the Vietnam Wall. The Lincoln Memorial and the Washingotn Monument were also impressive. Through observing the Jefferson memorial, I felt a great sadness, because I wished that Thomas Jefferson was alive and well. I felt like his death was fresh, even though he lived and died over one hunderd and fifty years or more before I was ever born.
