Saving Dogs from Puppy Mills  email this discussion to a friend?

Yesterday, I watched the Oprah show and one of the things discussed was the high amount of puppy mills there are in America. Have any of you heard of puppy mills in your area? Has anyone here saved a dog(s) that were from a puppy mill? How do you feel about how the dogs are treated in such places? What do you think of the pet stores which buy from puppy mills and then sell these animals? What about the laws in your state/area - how do you feel?

I think it's terrible that any animal could be kept in such closed confinement and poor conditions. Some dogs end up being mamed or even killed by other dogs because of the conditions in which they live (many puppies in "rabbit hutches"). Often their diet is poor and no one gives them any love or attention that they need in order to become good family pets. Do you agree?

PS: I am only referring to "puppy mills" and NOT to legitimate breeders who are registered and are happy to have potential buyers visit their facilities.

I don't purchase from pet stores for this reason. And because the fees are outrageous. Then there's the fact that a purebred, if you must have one, is easily accesible. I got my Siberian Husky from the animal shelter and my Great Dane from the corner of 54th and Wabash. I think there should be even tighter regulations placed on legimate breeders and that anyone who is not a legimate breeder should be required by law to spay or nueter their pet. As for puppy mill breeders I'd love to see them live in the same conditions that they forced on the animals. Unsanitary conditions, no grooming, no socialization or interaction with other people and do it all in a cell so small they can't even stand. I've no pity for anyone who subjects defenseless animals to that kind of treatment and even less for those who do it to gain a buck.

Hi Glahaye...welcome to myLot :)

I, too, would love to see puppy mill breeders even TRY to live in the same conditions in which these animals live. I don't understand what makes these people "tick". The Oprah show I mentioned, spoke of a situation where a puppy mill was raided and the owner was required to take 39 of the over 80 dogs he had to the vet. Instead of doing that, he shot all of the dogs while they were in their cages. And, you know what?? He got away with it scott free!!

I am so happy to see this article posted. It is a topic near and dear to my heart! I participate in a list serve that covers the state of Michigan for dog rescue. I have 4 little doggies that I own myself, so I have chosen not to foster, but instead, I help with transport, and I also do doggie home evaulations for Rescues that are placing dogs for adoptions. I am a social worker (for 40 years)so I have developed some unique systems to do the evals. Very similar to the children adoption studies, just shorter. The Rescues like them a lot! As far as puppymills, yes, I have transported some of those poor babies. They are filthy when we get them; some with deformities, some with bad eyes and skin conditions that are just from pure neglect. It would break your heart a hundred times over. Some people say "it is only a dog" "or a cat," etc. The way I feel is that we have made these furbabies very vulnerable by domesticating them, and therefore, it has become our respnsibility to take care of them. I believe more information is getting out there since that sports star was prosecuted for dog fighting. I was pretty amazed that the country in general was so outraged, but I was very pleased. If you would like to see a wonderful site that shows an agency that is doing remarkable things for these vulnerable animals, many from puppymills, please visit www.hua.org (Hearts United for Animals) Thanks for posting this topic. If anyone has any questions about dog rescue, please do not hesitate to ask me. Juanita

Hello Juanita and welcome to myLot :)

I checked out the website you mentioned and it is indeed a great site. I also noticed an ad for prisonersofgreed.org which has the slogan "Puppy Mills Breed Misery" - how true that is!! I'm impressed with the fact that there are measures available like the way you are involved in evaluations for potential dog owners. I had not heard of such thing before. Keep up the good work!

Hello Lifeluver! Thanks for responding to my note. I do like being a part of the rescue community. It is sometimes difficult because of the price of gas, etc. but I feel it is my contribution to the furbabies.
I see that you live in Nova Scotia. My husband and I have been very interested in traveling to your island someday. We live in Michigan. We are fascinated with NS. I hope you were safe related to the storms. Take care, Juanita

I have never heard of any puppy mills in my area, but believe me, if there were any to be found, my family and I would do whatever we needed to do to get them shut down. We are big animal lovers in my family, and we do what we can to help those in need that we know of.

I have heard of puppy mills here in Nova Scotia but only on the news after a raid has been carried out. I would be like you, do whatever possible to shut them down if I had known.
