To Freecycle or Not to Freecycle? That is my question!! email this discussion to a friend?

ahansen (22)1 year ago

About 2 years ago, I started a Freecycle group for our local area. When I first heard of Freecycle, the concept of passing items on and ridding myself of the extra clutter, finding items we may need, keeping items out of the landfill... it sounded great. Now, I myself have had nothing but success with the small group that I run. However, when I was going through the approval process, I read some unsettling things about the organization. Since then, I have read several emails and posts from former Freecycle Owners and Moderators that ended up creating alternative groups to Freecycle that "have more freedom of speech". Do you have experience with the Freecycle Network? Have you Owned/Moderated a Freecycle Group? What are your thoughts on Freecycle? Is it a great concept, great network or great concept, flawed network?

I thus far have had no problems with freecycling. However, I am not a moderator. I myself have received a few things that were worth while but have noticed there are people on there just trying to get rid of junk. I have also appreciated easily relieving myself of tons of excess baby stuff. Kids grow so fast that I am constantly getting rid of their clothes. All and all I think freecycle is a great idea. Besides, one mans trash is another mans treasure.

I'm glad your experience with Freecycle has been as good as mine! I did have an instance where one member offered up a refridgerator. After the couple picked it up and got it plugged in, they discovered that it didn't work, despite the listing that said it worked great. I think the offering couple were just trying to get out of the fee that the city charges to dispose of appliances. 1 out of 1000 isn't bad though!

Thanks for the comment! Happy Posting!!
