I've just finished watching the Sunday morning broadcast of Bill Moyer's Journal on PBS as I do most weeks. The guest today was Professor Andrew Bacevich, a war veteran who is very concerned about the direction in which this country is heading. I thought it was particularly telling that this was a re-broadcast from an original airing just weeks ago. What he has to say is so profound and insightful that I decided it should be required reading for everyone. I intend to order his book, The Limits of Power, as soon as I can. He lays out in an orderly fashion the events that have led us to the situation we are now facing. He shares his views on why we should be focusing on fixing things here at home and not involved in far-away wars that have drained us morally and financially. The most compelling part of the interview centered around the American presidency and our political system; what they were originally meant to de and what they have devolved into. His credibility is unquestionable because he is a veteran of the Vietnam War and has also suffered the loss of his son in the Iraq War.
