Did the mayans intend for their calendar to end in 2012?

Or did they just run out of space or something? What i mean is -- did they intend for it to end in that year or did they intend it to end when it ends? Or was it just due to mathematics? Perhaps they designed the calendar, realized it ends in 2012, but didn't care because it was so far off for them?
