I came across this quote . Often we are so concerned with what makes us feel good that we forget what makes us great. This seems so true and yet it got me thinking on the parameters we use to distinguish between being good and great. Is it attitiude, actions, habits, service, proffessionalism, humility, integrity....? What would you say ?

If you are good to your family friends and relatives you are a good person. If you are good to the society you become a great person.

Is it because with friends and family one is expected to be good and with society most hardly seem to care ? So when we do good for society and its get acknowledged and recognised we become great.. Thanks

Most people are good to their kith and kin only. May be they do not want to be great.

I think, being good and being great but vary in its intensity and level of perseverance. Greatness is but the more reflective side of the same coin. In today's world, being good is not an easy thing and we have to have a great strength in ourselves to be so. I am glad that we come across many in our life time who actually are ‘good’. Being great means that we have outshone on being good through our dispositions and as you have mentioned, as in integrity, humility, dedication, professionalism. All these strengthen us to measures beyond our imagination. We are the master of our own character. We can actually practice this and aim towards being great from being good. I would like to elaborate o the points you have mentioned and seriously feel that great people do not do different tings but they do things differently. 1. Humility: being humble from within is a great move. This not only gives us a strength to fight the wrongs but also help relate to the concerns of others. We can view the broader picture just by discarding pride, ego and jealousy. 2. Integrity: trust is a great thing and being trustworthy is itself a haloing experience. We are elevated instantly. People get an assurance and peace on knowing a trustworthy person. They confide in him and get liberated. What else could be greater! 3. Dedication: dedication, discipline and self control make us rise. The peace we get thus is unbelievable. A disciplined person is already close to being good. 4. Our dispositions: this is but the upshot of our character and someone with integrity, humility, discipline cannot hide it from the things he does, what he speaks and how he lives. Thank you. PS; That was quite an easy!

Great quote there! Thanks for sharing. I've also felt that right attitude and passion for the way we do things does also Yes, passion dedication, discipline and conviction make a great deal of difference. Having said this, the power to rise from failures, the ability to stand tall amidst scathing criticisms and that extra edge as in intelligence do play a vital role. Great people are essentially great leaders for we cannot but get inspired and follow them. But guess what, they are met with harsh criticisms, denials, resistances, ignorance and subsequently acceptance and acknowledging. The path is a long one and only a great person can survive this, a good man might now. Thanks for a great discussion. This has risen to a great one from being good in its conviction that posts are not mere thoughts they are great men's brain waves)

This is not an easy one to answer alok! If I were to make any statement at all it would be that GOOD is a certain level of proficiency in something that could arguably be seen as average or slightly above average; and GREAT means that we are somewhat stand alone or clearly far more proficient at something than most other people. The attained position of one or the other encompasses each and every one of the areas you put forward. Greatness is the achievement of a standing in society that far surpasses the norm and in a sense puts a person on the map in whatever field they have happened to achieve greatness in! Someone who is good at something will forever battle alongside others that share a similar level of achivement; yet someone who is great will be seen as a mentor, something to aspire to and a leader that may always be remembered.

It certainly is a tough one James. That is why i sought to seek the inputs of friends like you. I'm in agreement with what you have to say. But it sure leaves one question in my mind. Do we mostly then attribute the quality of greatness to people we remember ,that is after their life time ? Thanks for the response and have a geat day.

Michael Jordan once said, "Heart is what separates the good from the great." I do agree with him. If we're doing something and we put our whole heart into it it's inevitable that what we're doing will be great too. Well, it's what in our hearts that makes us great. ;D

This may not even be answering your question but I'll try my best anyway. For me, I think when we say we did good, it's good enough for our own standards. We can call our own deeds and actions good but ONLY other people can call such deeds/actions GREAT. I can't articulate what I want to say really well but it's like one becomes a hero only after other people call him that. He/she can't call themselves heroes regardless of what they did, be it putting their lives at risk for somebody else's unless other people deem it so. I think being good is adhering to one's moral beliefs and being great is going way beyond that.

You are right. Unless one has a huge ego then would always connect anything we do to be good and never great. Being great is i would agree beyond just adhering to one's moral beliefs. Thanks and have a great day.
